The upper crest of ultralight tents doesn't need an unattainable price. The Durston X-Mid one-person tent performs exemplary while being within the budget of most serious backpackers. It's still hard for us to believe that such an easy-to-set-up tent can be so delightful to spend camp time in while also being almost invincible to storms when the weather tries its best to make our nights not so bucolic. The secret is hidden in plain sight: a very well-thought-out pitch-out design using a two-pole offset mid-design and a rain fly made of no-stretch polyethylene-coated polyester. Add to that a separate interior mesh that wards off moisture from the ground and keeps bugs from penetrating your living space, and you've got a thru-hike-worthy winner. The engulfing exterior rain fly is one of the most solid features of the X-Mid. With its two-sided entranceways, you also get two usable vestibule areas measuring over 11 square feet on each side — more than enough to store your pack out of the weather.

The X-Mid 1 has been developed from the first principles of geometry to achieve the most weight efficient, simple to use, and stormworthy design for a trekking pole shelter. The result is a double wall tent that is incredibly user friendly, capable and spacious while weighing just 28 oz g. As a result, it has become one of the most awarded tents in recent years including awards for best tent from The Trek , Outdoor GearLab , Section Hiker and numerous other respected outlets. Most ultralight tents are designed more as fair weather shelters, and thus compromise stormworthiness and protection for weight savings - such as using lighter coatings that are barely waterproof, extremely thin fabrics, cutting away areas of the fly which leaves you most exposed, and omitting important features like peak vents and guy out points. With the X-Mid we save weight with efficient design including minimizing seams and maximizing the volume:surface ratio, so we can create a tent that is both light and capable in tough conditions. The X-Mid excels in rough weather with its fly first pitch, full doublewall design, non-sag poly fabric, large adjustable vents, factory waterproof seams, full-coverage fly blocks rain splatter and drafts , stormworthy shape, and protected entryways that avoid rain falling inside. No other tent can claim that list. Simplicity and user friendliness are a major focus for the X-Mid because the last thing you want in bad weather or at the end of a long day is a tent that is a hassle to use. We avoid complexity and improve the user experience with our focus on first principles design, combined with obsessive attention to detail and extensive real-world validation. Unlike most trekking pole tents, the rectangle based X-Mid offers a simpler 4 stake pitch. There are no mandatory guylines, no struts that are harder to pack up and store, and no measuring pole heights or estimating odd angles. It goes up quickly with just 4 required stakes and 2 poles that can be extended without measuring. Notably, the X-Mid uses polyester fabric for the fly which doesn't sag and absorb water like nylon so your pitch stays tight and the tent dries quickly.

Optimal Geometry Patented X-Mid geometry with twin offset poles provides best in class headroom, living space, stormworthiness, and ease of pitching. High-angle walls will dump snow vertical loads more easily and be less prone to collapse under excess accumulation, durston xmid 1. They also have a protected durston xmid 1 to keep rain out even when open, and can be propped open with a stick or pole to create a 'porch'.

Retaining the same basic design and geometry, the solid variant modifies a few important details to help with even more extreme conditions such as high winds, snow, and sub-zero temps. X-Mid 1 Solid, looking at the Maroon Bells. Typical Trail Weight fly, body, both stuff sacks, four V stakes, no apex guylines : The Solid variant reviewed here is geared more specifically for extreme conditions, especially alpine ski touring and other cold and windy environments. Desert hikers will appreciate the high and limited amount of mesh to keep sand and dust out of the sleeping area. If you need room for a friend, check out the X-Mid 2 Solid. As many people know, the winter of — was snowy and cold and presented difficult camping conditions throughout the west.

The most common critique of the original X-Mid 1 was that the inner is somewhat small. The inner is now larger in all dimensions, making it quite spacious for a 1P tent. The fly and footprint remain the same size. The X-Mid is a very stormworthy tent, with arguably the best rain and snow performance of any trekking pole tent. However, the weakest point has been vulnerability to wind gusts on the side panels. The result is a substantial improvement in wind performance, such that the X-Mid is now very good for a 3-season tent, while continuing to have excellent snow shedding and rain performance. The X-Mid is a very simple to use tent because its design is informed by extensive use in tough conditions where you want a shelter that just works. A more spacious, stormworthy and user friendly tent is great — unless it is heavier.

My only negative comments are these: the included stakes are extremely weak and bent in soft ground within my first two nights. The X-Mid has been a pioneer of lightweight polyester fabric because it doesn't absorb water and sag like nylon, so the shelter retains its structural integrity in wet conditions. Most tents are less consistent with a mix of shallower panels worse for snow shedding and steeper panels worse for wind performance. I've hiked thousands of miles, some on trails you've heard of CDT '21 and some you might not have Nolan's 14 '21, Pfiffner Traverse '22, Skurka-Wind River High Route '23 and currently enjoy thinking about hiking thousands more from behind a desk. There were a couple of times I couldn't get the setup right however that was total user fatigue and error. We weren't the first to use silpoly, but the X-Mid was the first popular ultralight tent to opt for polyester and our passionate defence of its merits has been a key reason for its resurgence. Factory sealed seams? This rarely led to dripping but does mean you may want to pack the inner and outer separately in poor weather, to keep the inner dry. You can return the product for any reason within the 30 days. The X-Mid is a delight to set up: loosely stake out the four sides, prop up the ceiling with your two trekking poles, cinch the guy lines down, and your rain fly is all set up. Doorways blocked by poles? I would recommend this tent all day long for someone that needs a do-it-all, ultralight-adjacent tent that is in for the long haul. I love the adjustable bathtub floor.

The X-Mid Pro 1 is the ideal tent for the ultralight backpacker.

While this premium quality gives the X-Mid a higher cost of production than comparable tents, we price it affordably because we sell it to you directly no middle man and with only a modest markup ourselves. To illustrate this, the table below compares the X-Mid 1 Solid to what is seen in competing tents in this niche 1P double wall trekking pole tents. The toughness of this tent for its weight is amazing. Guy lines allow for plenty of adjustment if you need to tighten your pitch, which you may also do by adjusting the height of your trekking poles. Total: My original purchase was through Amazon when this, I believe, was first introduced. There is no cord attached to them out of the box beside the required corners. If it does get wet, both pieces dry out incredibly quickly under sunny skies or in a light breeze The roominess, 2 entrances, and 2 large spaces for wet packs, gear and soaked shoes under the fly but outside of the inner tent add much to comfort and happiness. This has 2 mesh windows, but no pockets. It is based on the X-Mid 1 which has been developed from the first principles of geometry to possess the most weight efficient, simple, and stormworthy architecture for a trekking pole shelter.
