I am hoping to go into IB at a BB after college or PE if possible and was wondering which school would be a better choice. I have heard that UVA places better, but I am drawn to Vanderbilt's prestige and selectivity and the fact that it is a private school. However, with Echols, would UVA be considered more prestigious? I am definitely planning on joining a fraternity and having fun while in college. I assume you mean that McIntire is a target. Do you happen to know how difficult it is to be accepted to McIntire and do you think the Echols program will help with admission? I don't go to UVA but know a few things about it.

Its brother program in the Engineering School is the called Rodman Scholars. Due to some interesting moves on the part of the administration, some of the Echols' privileges have changed, and so it really is worth pondering if the program still has its once admired beauty or if it's rather fallen into the gutter. The part in italics is the new change. Now, Echols sign up for classes first within their own class. Alright, I have to be honest here. The Office of Admission looks for academic excellence, intellectual leadership, and evidence of the ability to grapple with complex topics. Unlike other honors programs, the Echols Scholars Program is not governed by strictly "quantitative" measures. This is because the Office of Admission attempts to be as qualitative and holistic in their evaluation of applicants as possible. Students selected for the Echols Scholars Program come from a diversity of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, urban and rural geographic locations, and public and private schools with various programs and opportunities. What matters is that the student has taken the strongest academic program and course of study possible in his or her school and has performed well in it. The Office of Admission is also interested in academic leaders and intellectual risk-takers. These qualities can be demonstrated in activities which include, but are no means limited to, participation in a Governor's School or other magnet school environment, advanced science fair competitions, scientific research and significant internships, music performances, Model UN conferences, Math Olympiad activities, quiz bowl competitions, forensic debate, and any other program that demonstrates substantive intellectual and creative achievement. Please understand that while these are examples of activities past Echols Scholars have engaged in, participation in these activities does not guarantee admission to the program. Prospective students are encouraged to mention significant academic extra-curricular activities in their application and to stress areas of leadership including honors and awards received related to these activities.
