The episode was directed by B. Novak , his directorial debut for the series, and written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. The series, presented in a mockumentary format, depicts the everyday lives of office employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictitious Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. In the episode, it is revealed that ten years earlier, Michael Steve Carell recklessly promised to pay for the college tuition of an entire local third grade class if they could complete high school. Lacking the personal wealth necessary to fulfill his promise, he and Erin Ellie Kemper must go tell the students, who are now high school seniors, that they will not be receiving the money.
Even though Michael was ultimately a good boss , he made plenty of empty promises to his employees, and in one lapse of judgment did the same for a classroom full of kids. Unfortunately, he waited far too long to break the bad news to the students, resulting in one of the show's most uncomfortable episodes. This was far and away the worst thing Michael Scott ever did on The Office. The school had named a classroom after him, the class performed a song and dance to celebrate his presence, and there was even a newspaper article about his generosity. Michael told the cameras that he promised the kids their college tuition because he thought he would be a multi-millionaire later in life.
