Laboratories available for graduate research include animal well-being cytogenetics, genomics, food technology, meat science, nutrition, molecular biology and reproductive physiology. The Robert Justus Kleberg, Jr. Animal and Food Science Center provides 39 laboratories for research and graduate training. Special equipment available in these laboratories or in readily accessible facilities, such as at the Computing Services Center, offer a wide array of opportunities for study and research. Dairy, beef, horse and swine herds and sheep and goat flocks at the main station or at research centers afford opportunities to study various problems in physiology, breeding, management, nutrition and production. A major objective of the Department is to offer degree programs that provides knowledge, skills and training to gain employment in research, teaching, extension, or industrial operations. Our goal is to develop critical thinkers and problems solvers to bridge the gap between fundamental animal science research and its practical application to the production of livestock and their products. The Department of Animal Science offers dynamic and challenging undergraduate and graduate programs that cover a broad variety of fields including animal behavior, animal biotechnology, beef cattle, dairy science, equine science, food science and technology, meat science, physiology of reproduction, sheep and goats, and swine. It includes courses in allied areas such as agronomy, range science, accounting, agricultural economics, and management. Students who plan to attend veterinary, medical, pharmacy, or graduate school are encouraged to select the science option. In addition to the core courses in animal science, this option includes approximately six semesters of chemistry and heavily emphasizes other areas such as biology, genetics, physics, physiology, and mathematics. These certificates are open to all undergraduate students, not just Animal Science majors. Students must complete 17 credit hours, including specialized courses in equine care, behavior, nutrition and production, to complete this certificate.
This curriculum is designed to provide scientific expertise in chemistry, biological and physical sciences and mathematics and is recommended for students considering entry into the veterinary, medical or allied health field, or the graduate program of their choice. This option provides a strong background for graduate study in a wide variety of disciplines. Animal scientists graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in this option who do not enter graduate or professional school find employment in rewarding careers in the pharmaceutical, clinical and food-related industries. Students may concentrate on an emphasis area within this option, including the following. Students gain experience working with animals through direct contact in laboratory courses and directed field study.
