It's easy to distinguish between the males and females of some animals, regardless of whether they're juveniles or adults. In the case of many species of tortoises, however, sexing based on physical appearance alone isn't too realistic. Sulcata tortoises Geochelone sulcata are certainly no exception to this rule. All baby sulcata tortoises and young tortoises look female. It can take years before you can accurately identify the gender of your sulcata. In order to accurately determine if your sulcata is male or female, the tortoise should be about 15 pounds and about 12 inches long. The two scutes are often called the gular horn.
