Surtur is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comicsserta thor, commonly as an enemy of Thor.

Seeking to prevent this prophecy, Odin defeated Surtur thousands of years ago, taking the source of his power, the Eternal Flame back to Asgard and confining Surtur to Muspelheim, where he remained for over 5, years. Despite this, Loki later resurrected him with the Eternal Flame and used him to defeat Hela. According to the prophecy, the end of Asgard was to begin with the Fire Demon Surtur, empowered by his Eternal Flame , raining destruction down on the Asgardian home world, consuming it in flames. Seeking to subvert fate, Odin battled Surtur, incapacitating him and taking the Eternal Flame, which he brought back to Asgard, sealing it in a vault beneath the palace.

The Fire Giant Surtur was native to the extra-dimensional plane of Muspelheim and was the mortal enemy of the Asgardian ruler Odin and his son Thor. Surtur and the Ice Giant Ymir were older, and therefore more powerful immortals than Odin and Thor, who were always hard pressed to defeat them. Surtur was imprisoned for a long time within the depths of the Earth. In ancient times, as Odin intended to unite Aesir and Vanir into a single tribe, no matter the cost, Surtur proposed Vanir leader Freyr help against the Aesir, resulting in a years-long war between the two Gods kinds. He would cross the Bifrost and destroy Asgard with the Twilight Sword. He was once freed by Loki and set against the Earth when Odin visited it to break the romance between Thor and Jane Foster. Thor used Odin's magic sword to send Surtur to outer space, where he was bound against a magnetic asteroid. Doctor Strange transported Ymir to the South Pole right in front of Surtur just as both were about to strike, their blows canceled each other out, causing both monsters to vanish in a massive explosion. Surtur freed himself again and arrived through the mystical flame in Asgard. The Fire Giant then decided that he would destroy Asgard first, then Earth then the entire universe, marking his arrival by setting the very sky ablaze.

Surtr is attested in the Poetic Edda , compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda , written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. Surtr has been the subject of place names and artistic depictions, and scholars have proposed theories regarding elements of Surtr's descriptions and his potential origins. No further detail is given about the fight between Surtr and Freyr in the poem. Third adds that Surtr has a flaming sword, and that "at the end of the world he will go and wage war and defeat all the gods and burn the whole world with fire".
