Reddit has never been much of a stranger to controversy, and the site has faced mounting pressure from copyright-holders to do something about piracy. Having spoken to the community about initiating "The Nuclear Option", the decision was taken to delete nearly a decade's worth of content. The decision was not one that was taken lightly, but the moderators noted that with so many complaints coming in,"the suspension of this subreddit is a question of 'when', not of 'if'". The problem has been worsened by the fact that it is not just the posting of copyrighted content or links to it which proves problematic. In true democratic style, the course of action that should be taken was put up for a vote. This would be able to catch most possible infringing content, it would show the reddit admins that we put a good faith effort to follow their request, and with a stringent enough moderation, we should be able to avoid future potential triggers. The cons is of course that we lose historical content, but I doubt anyone is actually using the search function here to look for stuff, and most important guides have been captured already, and if not, you should go ahead and do so anyway! The result was conclusive , with those agreeing with the proposal outnumbering those who disagreed to-1, and so the progress of scrubbin' began. Reddit is trying to clean-up its act — and it's taking on illegal streaming in a big way. A decade of discussion about digital piracy is being methodically erased from the subreddit, sparked by takedown notices on two-year-old posts. No-one should expect the deletion of a few dozen links to dent piracy, though it may have a chilling effect on simply talking about it. But in mid-March, the moderators received a letter from Reddit's lawyers , warning that the group risks being shut down after 74 copyright complaints via the US DMCA system. In response, the subreddit's moderators have started deleting any posts older than six months, in an effort to avoid any further complaints resulting in the group being banned from Reddit. Reddit has been some of its most toxic subreddits in recent months. Links to dodgy streams or downloads are banned, with moderators and even a bot deployed to remove any that do get posted, catching about 80 per cent and relying on the community to report the rest. And plenty of the conversation is around piracy, rather than simply sharing sources. There are discussions about feeling withdrawal if you don't pirate regularly, whether people tell their friends that they pirate, and increasing worries about copyright trolls, as well as generic tech and troubleshooting questions. But there's also — on the front page of the subreddit, despite the looming copyright complaints — plenty of requests for help finding sites for specific pirated material as well as breaking licence checks on games.
