Like the other planets, the Earth is a sphere. It rotates around its own axis slowly but continuously, and completes this rotation about once every 24 hours. As the Earth rotates, part of the Earth is facing the sun, and part of it faces away. This is why some parts of the world have day and night at different times. There are a number of reasons why scientists know that the Earth is round, and not flat. It turns out that we can test many of these reasons out for ourselves, too. And a ship will slowly start to disappear from view as it gets farther away.

Spherical Earth or Earth's curvature refers to the approximation of the figure of the Earth as a sphere. The earliest documented mention of the concept dates from around the 5th century BC, when it appears in the writings of Greek philosophers. The concept of a spherical Earth displaced earlier beliefs in a flat Earth : In early Mesopotamian mythology , the world was portrayed as a disk floating in the ocean with a hemispherical sky-dome above, [8] and this forms the premise for early world maps like those of Anaximander and Hecataeus of Miletus. Other speculations on the shape of Earth include a seven-layered ziggurat or cosmic mountain , alluded to in the Avesta and ancient Persian writings see seven climes. The realization that the figure of the Earth is more accurately described as an ellipsoid dates to the 17th century, as described by Isaac Newton in Principia. Earth is massive enough that the pull of gravity maintains its roughly spherical shape. Most of its deviation from spherical stems from the centrifugal force caused by rotation around its north-south axis. This force deforms the sphere into an oblate ellipsoid. The Solar System formed from a dust cloud that was at least partially the remnant of one or more supernovas that produced heavy elements by nucleosynthesis. Grains of matter accreted through electrostatic interaction. As they grew in mass, gravity took over in gathering yet more mass, releasing the potential energy of their collisions and in-falling as heat. The protoplanetary disk also had a greater proportion of radioactive elements than Earth today because, over time, those elements decayed.

Why are we even having this discussion? It's crazy that there are people who not only believe the Earth is flat like a pizza but also try to prove it. It's like trying to prove you shouldn't add pineapple as a topping on your pizza which you obviously should. Maybe they just like a challenge. It's not easy to create a flat-Earth model that accommodates all the evidence against it. I mean, humanity figured this one out a long time ago.

After my first few posts, I thought it reasonable to write up something like a mission statement that explains this newsletter. We live in an increasingly complex world. Topics of public import are often beyond the time investments of most people to research and synthesis. It is hard enough for many people to stay on top of their daily work and raise a family, much less become experts on everything that matters. So, people look to experts, particularly through the media. But there is an increasing sense among many of us that the experts have failed us, and the media is corrupt. The erosion of trust of public trust in institutions has varied over time, and more recently by the year. Top-down solutions to information propagation create unique honey pots that tempt those with the money and power to gatekeep in ways that suit their interests. What the world needs is for the people to rise up in an information revolution. While this is happening to some degree in media as journalists like Glenn Greenwald and writers such as Scott Alexander ditch the corporate umbrella and build an audience, that isn't enough.

Chinese Science. The idea is to see whether the surface of the water is flat or curved. Apr 24, Energy is still being released; volcanic and tectonic activity has pushed rocks into hills and mountains and blown them out of calderas. However, if the energy release from these processes halts, then they tend to erode away over time and return toward the lowest potential-energy curve of the ellipsoid. Article Talk. You can even record the period and use this to calculate your latitude. Oct 14, If the Earth was flat, we would be able to look out and see very far, assuming that there were no buildings in the way. If the Earth is indeed flat, then the water in a large lake or ocean should also be flat.
