Antisemitic tropes or antisemitic canards are " sensational reports , misrepresentations , or fabrications " [1] that are defamatory towards Judaism as a religion or defamatory towards Jews as an ethnic or religious group. Since the Middle Ages , such reports have been a recurring motif of broader antisemitic conspiracy theories. Historically, antisemitic tropes have often taken the form of popular libels, [2] conspiracy theories, or the denial or minimization of past atrocities against Jews. These tropes are paralleled in later 7th century descriptions of Jews in the Quran which state that they were visited with wrath from Allah because they disbelieved in Allah's revelations, for taking usury, and condemned to punishment. During those times, it was widely believed that Jews caused epidemics like the Black Death by poisoning wells. Jews were also accused of ritually consuming the blood of Christians.

The BBC has shut down claims that an Oxford University college mascot which appeared on a recent episode of University Challenge was a coded antisemitic attack. Christ Church College appeared on Monday night's episode of the popular BBC Two quiz show with a blue octopus soft toy on their desk in full view of the audience. Other social media users claimed that the blue octopus was an intentional symbol of hatred towards Jewish people, as it resembles Nazi propaganda. Meanwhile, some even implied that the jacket worn by one contestant bore the colours of the Palestinian flag, in reference to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Israel. The mascot is one of many chosen by the team during the course of the series and is one of their favourite animals. It has no connection to any flag. Prior to this, some commenters on social media had raised scepticism about the inclusion of octopus, accusing the broadcaster of antisemitic bias. A few days later, screengrabs from University Challenge went viral on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, with conservative politicians and journalists accusing the BBC program of tacitly endorsing antisemitism. Shortly thereafter, the BBC debunked such claims, clarifying that the episode was shot in March , well before the start of the Israel-Hamas war ; and that Gorgianeh was wearing not a Palestinian flag, but a Zara windbreaker. The University Challenge incident echoed that of a similar one a month prior, involving climate activist Greta Thunberg.
The Swedish climate activist recently took to social media to share a photo of herself holding a "Stand with Gaza" sign. However, netizens were quick to point out that the picture contained a blue-colored plushie octopus, which is apparently similar to a symbol that has been considered antisemitic since artist Seppla Josef Plank created a cartoon in, showing a blue-colored octopus with tentacles encircling the globe with a Star of David atop its head. As per the Anti-Semitism Policy Trust , the cartoon was a depiction of the antisemitic theory of Jewish control over the world.
