When Light, disguised as Kira, killed the man who murdered Misa's parents, she instantly developed a fanatical obsession with him. After finding out the real identity of Kira, her obsession turned to infatuation, so she decided to seek him out herself. Upon meeting him, Light realized that because she had a Death Note of her own she would be of use to him. He agreed to let her be his girlfriend, but he did not like her back, he was only manipulating her to help achieve his goal. Throughout the series, as a part of Light's agreement to be her boyfriend, the pair go on many dates and even share a kiss. The only actual love in this ship is on Misa's side.
