Those who have used GarageBand on an iPad will be familiar with a touch interface for virtual instruments and recording, but with Logic Pro, you have a whole lot more things to adjust — more knobs, faders, automations, plug-ins, and samples. That being said, nothing really felt cramped or hard to navigate in this interface. Using it on my iPad mini might not be as fun, though. The biggest change with adapting Logic Pro for the iPad is the way you interact with plug-ins, the play surfaces, and the redesigned browser.

It might not be a replacement for the Mac version, but Logic Pro for iPad is a killer application in its own right, and one that has the potential to re-energise both your creativity and the iOS music-making space in general. Logic Pro for iPad is better thought of as a completely new music production playground - albeit one that will be very familiar to both GarageBand for iPad and Logic Pro Mac users - but could easily serve as an upgrade for users of the former and a very interesting sister app for users of the latter. What of storage requirements, though? Entry-level iPads over the past few years have typically come with either 32GB or 64GB of space, so is that enough? That really depends on how much of that space you have left and how much of the Logic Pro content you want to install. There are more than in total, many of which have come straight out of Logic for Mac hello Retro Synth, ES2, Space Designer, etc but some of which are completely new. As with all the other instruments, these can be played with a choice of touch interfaces. Just double-tap one to open the full interface. It all comes down to the interface and workflow, which have been beautifully optimised for the touchscreen experience.

Apple has long siloed its creative apps into professional and consumer buckets. Mac users who wanted to upgrade and were willing to pay for the pro-level software could jump from the mainstream apps to the more advanced ones, but iPad owners didn't have that option. Now that Apple is launching both Final Cut and Logic Pro for iPad, I can see both of these new versions being used for on-the-go production. For example, editing video while on location, or casually putting together beats on a plane or train trip.

With the new Mastering Assistant and its professional palette of intuitive sound-shaping tools, musicians can deliver a release-ready mix faster than ever. Logic Pro for Mac now gets incredible sample manipulation with Sample Alchemy, and the radical reshaping and reshuffling capabilities of Beat Breaker. Producers and beat makers with their own collections of samples can quickly build kits or custom instruments using improved multitasking features such as Split View and Stage Manager. And users can work easily between Mac and iPad with project round-tripping, taking the music-making experience on the road or to the studio. Mastering Assistant offers creators a quick and easy way to add that final professional polish for a release-ready mix. Once a mix is complete, Mastering Assistant can instantly analyze the audio and make expert refinements to the sound, adjusting elements such as the dynamics, frequency balance, timbre, and loudness. Logic Pro now supports bit float recording when used with compatible audio interfaces. This helps artists minimize the digital clipping that can occur when recording more dynamic instruments or performances. With bit float, even recordings made at lower levels can be easily amplified without increasing the noise floor, providing studio-quality audio and flexibility in post-production.

In fact, many of the features in Logic Pro for iPad come directly from it. I don't think it's a complete replacement for the Mac-based version of Logic -- sometimes you just need the full keyboard and mouse version using an iPad Magic Keyboard is close but not perfect , or third-party plug-ins or the ability to jump between other non-iPad apps. Drag and drop is used extensively in the app for patches, loops and other content, and this interaction works beautifully. Surprisingly, I did not feel the need for a keyboard with Logic Pro and used the Magic Keyboard to mostly prop up the iPad. That said, this is less of an issue for Logic Pro, which has always had a huge collection of included plugins for everything from EQ to mastering to guitar effects, as well as instrument sounds, loops and all the other building blocks needed to make music. Review Overview Our rating 9. Using it on my iPad mini might not be as fun, though. Another potential issue is that third-party plugins will need new iPad versions, which may or may not ever arrive. Make beats, play instruments, record, edit, and mix. Whatever you load, Logic brings up the relevant screen sections, all of which can be easily resized or hidden. Even though the iPad interface took some getting used to, I was able to manipulate individual MIDI notes, change sounds and tweak effects, quantize my playing and do everything I'd expect to from a desktop DAW. Related Final Cut Pro for the iPad is slick, but limited. In fact, we found ourselves using the Pencil more and more during the course of our testing in the piano roll and step sequencer, for example and having a keyboard gives you immediate access to a lot of common Logic Pro shortcuts. Jump To: What is it? Apple has also added more samples and tools to this new version, including Sample Alchemy and Beat Breaker, which are some very fun experiment tools for manipulating sounds. The new iPad version of Logic Pro is especially interesting to me, as I have a long history of using various digital audio workstation, or DAW, apps over the past 20 years, including ProTools, Adobe Audition and Logic -- even going back so far that I previously used Logic on Windows PCs before Apple bought the brand in
