The introduction of Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark remains as vividly exciting and defining in as it did to audiences when the film first released in And, indeed, the scene had influence pre-dating that, being the audition script that Karen Allen screen-tested with when auditioning for the role.

While sitting down with EW to reminisce for the 40th anniversary of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Allen opened up about her simian costar. Despite Marion's rather loving relationship with a capuchin monkey she and Indy Harrison Ford encounter in Cairo she even jokes that it's their "baby" , Allen says the animal was challenging. I don't know where that monkey came from.

In most of the second half of the film, Marion Ravenwood portrayed by Karen Allen loses her white open-toe high heel shoe when she is pushed into The Well of the Souls and then she lands on the lap of Indiana Jones portrayed by Harrison Ford. She then tries to keep the snakes away from her while wearing one shoe with her left foot exposed with some close up shots, and after Indy makes a statute fall down, she takes off her remaining shoe and continues the rest of the adventure barefoot. Your character, Marion Ravenwood, is this resilient woman who is unintimidated by men and is able to take care of herself when the situation demands it. How did it feel to play such a strong female character, especially when those kind of roles were more rare at the time?

Love hate fantasy
How was that to film? It was almost a normal occurrence. Somehow I really internalized this feeling that these guys were meant to be together. There was the cobras but we shot them through glass because it was very dangerous to be close to them. He didn't tell me much about the film, it was just considered Steven Spielberg's next project. Marion has four or five different costumes in the course of this thing, and I really enjoyed them all but the white dress with the big bow on my butt was the one I could have done without. When I first read it, I wept. Why did someone even bother loading this? After looking for five years, Karen and her husband-to-be Kale Browne found a house in Monterey where they settled together. It's such a wonderful introduction to the character in the film, And then when they asked me to do the film, they sent me for the first time the whole script, so I got to read the script after they had made an offer to me. Absolutely, I would want to. The snakes were just suddenly a real part of it, and fortunately, I'm not particularly afraid of snakes, so it wasn't as hard as if I had a horror of snakes or something. The snakes were kept in these large bins, and there would be maybe several hundred snakes in a bin. So, it was quite a wonderful invitation to me to play a character like that. There are no comments for Mark S. Certainly, in the Well of Souls with all the snakes, it was very challenging. Her offscreen distaste for her difficult scene partner aside, Allen had the time of her life making Raiders of the Lost Ark — and the fourth Indiana Jones film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull nearly 30 years later. I was very, very thrilled because that was what I had always imagined.
