The complex inner workings of the inner world are the most complicated area of exploration next to the spiritual. These spaces are rarely understood and are often difficult to control.
Released on Sept. The film premiered at the South by Southwest festival earlier this year. As Samidha grows up in a predominantly white town, she learns to distance herself from anything that might spotlight her cultural identity — she goes by Sam at school, responds to her parents in English instead of Hindi, and mysteriously breaks off her friendship with the other Indian girl in their high school, Tamira Mohana Krishnan. Things worsen when she lashes out at Tamira, unleashing a folkloric Hindu monster. I was determined to love this movie for the South Asian artists involved, but ended up puzzled and unfulfilled. Rather than brimming with pride for the portrayal of my cultural experience in a beloved genre, it felt like any other horror movie, except with a few half-baked details of the Indian American experience thrown in for good measure. Although this unsettling atmosphere was compelling at the start of the film, the latter half felt slow and dragging.

I had the chance to chat with It Lives Inside writer and director Bishal Dutta about the Indian folklore that inspired the film — and it will definitely keep you up at night. In his director statement, Bishal elaborated , " After I moved to North America from India at the age of 4, a lot of my social education came from watching American horror films. I always wondered, what were families like mine doing while Bruce the shark tore through Amity's waters, while Freddy Krueger slashed teenagers in the dreamscape, and while Jack Torrance chased his son through the maze-like halls of the Overlook? His statement continued, " As it developed, It Lives Inside formed its own dual identity much like mine. On one hand, it is a love letter to the community and culture that raised me, while on the other, it is a visceral experience that is designed to instill the same raw terror in its viewers that my favorite horror films instilled in me. The weaker you are mentally and emotionally, the more likely you are to be a target. After watching It Lives Inside , I sleep with the lights on and a mason jar. Just watch the movie, and you will see why. The next time you decide to go night fishing, be warned that fish might not be the only thing you may encounter. I recommend watching The Lighthouse if you are looking for a sea monster tale similar to the baak. Once a churel absorbs a man's beauty, he's left looking like an unrecognizable, older version of himself. So if you're ever in doubt about meeting a churel, check their feet.

Not long ago, I visited my lovely Aunt Mary. At the end of a wonderful reunion, she sent me home with a keepsake book and a Mason jar filled with her scrumptious homemade apple butter. You see, Hindu mythology tells us certain demons must be contained. And in this creepy flick, there is one demon — a Pishacha — whose momentary home is the aforementioned Mason jar. Tamira and Sam are high school students, the latter working hard to leave her Indian cultural roots behind, much to the chagrin of mother Poorna the beautiful Neera Bajwa.

Megan Suri stars as Sam, a teenager who has to fend off a demon kidnapping other Indian American teens. The film received largely positive reviews, and even got Dutta his next gig: an untitled post-apocalyptic horror film produced by James Wan. How are those woven into the movie? I was also drawing on experiences from family and friends, but I think that when I came here, there was this binary world that I had to live in.

For me, suspense is a conversation with the audience. I grew up loving movies like " Jaws " and " Alien. Opinion: NYU should be more transparent about its investments. More to explore. Just watch the movie, and you will see why. I wanted to make something that felt fun, like those movies and would still give me that kind of feeling when I was 13, 14, 15, watching stuff like Insidious or Sinister or Paranormal Activity in theaters. Opinion: NYU should promote more conversation clubs. More specifically, it finds its basis in the filmmaker's upbringing. The film generates themes of guilt, shame and loneliness that feed the characters' fears. Why did you decide to settle on how the creature looked at the end of It Lives Inside , or were there any other variations you wanted to try? When you show it, it is that monster, but until you show it, it's your monster.
