Created by Toei Animation based on series protagonist Goku 's visual design by franchise creator Akira Gokus dadhe first appears in the animated television special Dragon Ball Z: Bardock — The Father of Goku as its morally ambiguous protagonist. Bardock has few overall manga and anime appearances within the series, though he plays a pivotal part as Goku's biological father in setting up the backstory of his son, originally known by the name Kakarot, gokus dad, as one of the last survivors of the Saiyan genocide by the intergalactic tyrant Frieza.

The revamped version of the character from the Minus manga takes this a step further, showing himself to be outwardly friendly to other Saiyans and showing genuine care for his wife and sons. Though Goku is much kinder and just than his father is overall, the two do share some qualities beyond their physical traits. This independence can be attributed to his Saiyan pride, giving some insight into what made Frieza so weary of the Saiyan race to begin with.
