An Executive Roundtable at the World Cargo Symposium discussed the key themes of safety, sustainability, and digitalization. Safety is a core value of aviation, and this will always remain the case. The challenge is ensuring that dedication filters throughout the supply chain, especially when it comes to dangerous goods. Sustainability is an obvious priority across all industries and air cargo is already working hard to reduce its carbon footprint. Eliminating single use plastics, making ULDs lighter, and getting rid of needless paperwork is just a small sample of the efforts taking place. Of course, reducing paperwork is also part of the digital transformation. The principal challenge is the sheer number of systems in the supply chain that makes implementing any new digital tool a complex undertaking. The panel noted, however, that in both sustainability and digitalization, engagement with regulators is essential and the pace of progress must accelerate. Regulators must support industry efforts to decarbonize and implement digital processes. Forward thinking policies on sustainable aviation fuels SAF would include incentives to start or increase SAF production while digitalization would be helped by harmonized systems at customs and rules that no longer require a piece of paper to be presented. Such support would go a long way to quickening the rate of change but, of course, the industry itself can and will move faster. Nevertheless, it was also pointed out that considerable progress has been made and continues to happen daily. Beyond the key themes, the panel also discussed attracting new talent to the industry. The entire supply chain lost skills and experience during the pandemic and air cargo is still a people-first business.

In years past, booking a short-term rental for vacation was a fun, cost-effective way to experience a new destination. With filters for price points, privacy, and choice amenities, finding anything from a beachside apartment to a treehouse in the forest was a breeze for travel enthusiasts. While demand has not decreased for short-term rentals, the hospitality industry has changed, and travelers are taking note. The early COVID pandemic halted traveling worldwide for most, with many international borders closing in the first year of the global health crisis. As countries have reopened and traveling becomes more widespread again, the rising cost of travel and day-to-day life has pinched budgets across the world.
