The races, which will take place on a former airport runway in the town of Riverhead, is the successful culmination of many years of tireless efforts by the more than 20, members of a Facebook group dedicated to racing on the island, and a determined dragstrip operator and promoter who never backed down from a most unlikely mission. Florida native Pete Scalzo, the CEO of Motorsports Management Group, has a long track operating record in the sport — he also knows a thing or two about fighting uphill battles. He then turned his attention to the ill-fated Twin Branch Motorsports Complex in West Virginia , where he again fought a bevy of political red-tape, to no avail. Many years before all of that, however, he had approached leaders on Long Island about opening a dragstrip. Almost twenty years to be exact. They went nuts. Long Island, spanning square miles, has a population of more than 7. The 7,foot runway, the shorter of two located at the site, was formerly the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant, Calverton which was owned by the United States Navy and used to assemble, test, refit and retrofit jets built by the Grumman Corporation.

There, a local airport was being used to hold quarter mile acceleration races. Hot rodders in the area were reveling in the fact they they too could take part in what was happening all over the country. For more information on the history of Dover Dragstrip, log on to www. Anderson was enamored with what he saw, and the very next day was out looking for a parcel of land to build a legitimate drag strip. He tracked down and purchased acres of farmland in Wingdale, New York and entered a partnership with Joe Archiere to help clear and develop the land. The Dover Dragstrip opened its gates on May 14, with the help of the Danbury Modifiers, who played the role of crew and inspectors. And he still has the ticket. Nevertheless, Dover Dragstrip became the place to be for racers across several nearby states. But in those 15 years, Dover Dragstrip forged some great history and left behind a trail of memories that racers from the era will never forget.

The facility has sat dormant for six years, its still relatively new structures and surface — it was built in — slowly being reclaimed by nature.
