Marvel Dice Throne is our first experience with this game system that started in Dice Throne gives players custom dice and asymmetric character powers with a Yahtzee -style mechanic. I almost pulled the trigger on purchasing a couple 2-packs to see what the system is all about. With characters like Doctor Strange and Black Panther now part of the mix, Dice Throne is even more attractive since I have a Marvel obsessed teenager. Licensing these Marvel heroes and villains are a fantastic fit for this system.

Marvel Dice Throne is a head-to-head dice and card battling game that can be aptly described as battle Yahtzee. After all, its core mechanism is rolling five dice up to three times and choosing which ones to keep with each roll. There is much more to the game than just that. You can find a video version of this review on my YouTube Channel! Players take the role of characters such as Scarlet Witch, and Thor. While every character follows the same basic principle of rolling dice, they are exceptionally asymmetric in how they use those dice. Marvel Dice Throne is my first introduction to the series. But I should note that they are all cross-compatible, and characters from any set can be pitted against one another. Marvel Dice Throne or even Dice Throne in general is one of the best-looking games around, with a seriously cool set of components. Every character has its own tray that makes set up last just a few seconds, and it all fits neatly into the box effortlessly. The convenience of the individual character trays makes it easy to plop down and start playing, even on the go. Each character features these really nifty fold-out boards that look fantastic with great artwork and colors that pop. Every character also comes with a deck of cards, a set of dice with symbols entirely unique to that character, and status tokens that are, you guessed it, unique to them. Everything about the components is high quality, not just from a material standpoint, but from a gameplay perspective as well. Every character is vastly different from one another.

Every Marvel Dice Throne hero was painstakingly designed and balanced to provide the most thematic experience possible, allowing you to truly embody your favorite heroes like no other game. In any event, I honestly knew nothing about it — and now I have two versions of the game to play — both this as well as Dice Throne Season 2… In the system, each player needs their own hero dice and cards to play Dice Throne. To start the game, each player needs to choose their character again, this could be from any Dice Throne box , and take all the bits for their choice — a hero board, leaflet, health dial, combat points dial, dice, deck of cards, and any associated tokens. The leaflet is a nice concise player aid this lists your special abilities, your possible dice faces, the relative complexity of that particular character, as well as a FAQ for your particular hero. In a 4p game, the players are split into two teams of two — and each team shares a single health dial… At the start of the game, health dials are set at Players start the game with 2 Combat Points CP. On its own Dice Throne is already immensely entertaining, but what happens when you pair it with the comics giant Marvel? Turns out you get one of the best pick-up-and-play Marvel experiences around, as The Op and Roxley's Marvel Dice Throne combines the already addictive and easy-to-learn mechanics of the base game and pairs them with the stellar theme and rich roster of characters from the House of Ideas, and it's a combination that is rather difficult to pull away from. I'd play another round of Marvel Dice Throne in a heartbeat, and any Marvel fan is absolutely going to feel the same way. Dice Throne is a versus-style game that gives you each a unique character to play, and you activate their special abilities by rolling dice and amassing the needed combination of symbols. The dice all have varying symbols that match your character's ability load out, but many times you have several different options you can pursue between your allowed re-rolls. The added element of risk vs reward provides each turn with just enough unpredictability, and while you can push things too far and end up with nothing to do, those times are few and far between, so most turns end in some sort of forward movement. This time around Dice Throne has the Marvel canon at its disposal, and it utilizes the theme to great effect.

Dice Throne! But this is a game of no intricacies, and yet — a game of true depth. While there is a Vegas quality to your roll of the dice and even a card called Vegas, baby! Dice Throne is basically a bunch of boxes containing two characters each or eight if you go for the Battle Chests , where every hero crafted stands out by virtue of its uniqueness and interesting mechanics that make this game so compelling and memorable. Season 1 and Season 2 Rerolled are the foundations upon which the Dice Throne world is built. The Season 1 and Season 2 come in multiple options, whether you go for a Battle Chest containing each of the eight characters available in a season, or the far better in my opinion piecemeal approach where you grab a box at a time and figure out whether you enjoy it. Your character is represented by a high-quality, thick cardboard that is laid out on the table and features gorgeous art. On this board, all of your skills will be available, whether you are looking to stun your enemy, inflict damage, or defend yourself from an oncoming attack.
