Pop stars, politicians, princes all seem to have the same job these days — podcast interviewer. But while these pods are great for brand-building and soft power, are they damaging the industry at large? The biggest tech companies in the world — Amazon, Spotify, Apple — are desperate to have a library of hit podcasts and are willing to stump up for anything that seems like a proven winner. But it is not just the fees that have transformed. When podcasting first began, most of the shows were either the endeavours of solo hobbyists or repackaged public radio shows. Quickly the format exploded as a way to deliver deeply reported news or investigations, and for comedians to riff off each other. But in podcasts are becoming increasingly dominated by one format: the celebrity-on-celebrity interview. An entertaining, longform audio interview is hardly a new idea. Its origins can be traced back to , when the first episode of Desert Island Discs was broadcast on the BBC Forces Programme, a service aimed at keeping up the morale of British soldiers stationed in France. Both shows are warm yet combative, relentlessly researched interview shows — public radio in excelsis.

Posted: Jan 2, pm. Really sorry this trick is so old but just stumbled across it on YouTube. It's the one where Derren Brown is performing a small packet card effect with Stephen Merchant, He has two cards that have the words Yes and No on them. It's the usual stunt of spectator trying to guess which card is on the table or held by Derren. I've seen people are commenting that the trick is from one of Derren's books, which I'm happy to buy just for this trick However, being a card and sleights person I'm hoping that's what this is and NOT one of those reading the spectators mind, body language, eyes etc
For 20 years, the psychological illusionist has delighted TV audiences. His comfortable red fleece, draped over a blue shirt, is at odds with the macabre surroundings. He claims to have acquired more than pieces of ethically sourced taxidermy, displayed throughout his home. I quite like painting. I like my taxidermy. Even explaining the grim process of taxidermy, he manages to be charming and approachable — and to use the same, assured rationality with which he analyses his tricks. In recent years Brown has striven to reinvent himself as a philosopher. Gone are the TV shows filled with street magic performed by a goateed, horn-haired Brown. In their place are grand, Truman Show-style events, whose subjects learn valuable life lessons while Brown draws conclusions about human behaviour. His writing, too, has moved away from the minutiae of conjuring to focus on the mind: specifically, what makes us happy.

Whether you press record or not is almost academic. A particularly scary clip from his special Russian Roulette where Derren attempts to predict the location a live bullet in a handgun then fires the empty chambers with the gun to his head. This invention and Derrens routine that you quote are extremely similar - almost identical - though Derren appears to use a slightly different method at the end.
