Normally, dhclient produces no output, to see what it's doing, we need to give it the -v verbose option. We need to run dhclient as root with the sudo command, because changing the system networking configuration requires escalated privileges. Let's start by running dhclient verbosely, without any other options. It should reach out and say "hello" to our DHCP server, which, in our example is home router. It sent this request from our wireless Internet interface wlan0. Note that the DHCP server also told us how long our dynamic IP address will last: seconds about 12 hours from now, at which point it will be renewed automatically. So let's manually release our address with -r.

The -r flag forces dhclient to first release any leases you have, you can then use this command to request a new lease:. I wouldn't recommend running either over an SSH connection, although you'll probably get away with the first one if it doesn't come back with a new ip address. Would comment p. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. The new server is up and running, and I have successfully connected a client. My question: is there any way to send a broadcast to the network prompting all current lease holders - which still hold a lease from the router - to get a new lease from the new server? I don't believe there is a standard for recalling leases, since the lease time tells the client to hang on to the address until expiration. If they're all in one switch, a work around is to power cycle the switch; most OSes will then renegotiate the lease, which would use the new DHCP server instead. If any interface reports a working carrier then dhcpcd will try and obtain a lease before forking to the background, otherwise it will fork right away. This behaviour can be modified with the -b , - -background and -w , - -waitip options. This feature needs to be enabled in the kernel and dhcpcd will start using it. If no Identity Association is configured, then a Non-temporary Address is requested. When using IPv4LL, dhcpcd nearly always succeeds and returns an exit code of 0. To disable this behaviour, you can use the -L , - -noipv4ll option. If a single interface is given then dhcpcd only works for that interface and runs as a separate instance to other dhcpcd processes. Using a single interface also affects the -k , -N , -n and -x options, where the same interface will need to be specified, as a lack of an interface will imply Master mode which this is not. To force starting in Master mode with only one interface, the -M , - -master option can be used. For systems that support route metrics, each route will be tagged with the metric, otherwise dhcpcd changes the routes to use the interface with the same route and the lowest metric.
