Broadwayworld message board
The simple thought of the theatre chat boards like BroadwayWorld or TheatreBoard is enough to send writers, directors, performers and producers running screaming into the night. If producers had magic powers, they would make these boards vanish, but why, why do they have such a bad rap? I have been a member of the Broadway World chat board for well over a decade, I have seen everything you can see from smartly written reviews, bitching and fighting, gossiping and paid shills more on that later. Over the years my mind has flipped back and forth on the idea of these message boards, are they simply a way for theatre fans to express and share opinions, or do they do more harm to the industry than good? Here is the thing though, with all the drama that can happen on these boards, they also contain members who I think offer a valuable contribution to the art form, ones who give smart critiques of shows, often far better reviews than the critics themselves. Oh, and that message board member who thought my play sucked, well he was right, it did. These outlets allow theatre fans to connect from around the world, share casting gossip, backstage stories, news from workshops of upcoming shows and more, it can be a fun place for a theatre nerd like myself. However, one of the things the message boards are most notorious for are reviews from the paying public, starting straight away with the first preview performance, and the industry HATES these. However, that does not and should not apply to message boards where members will review the show from the first preview onwards. You see, many years ago, when a new show was in previews the tickets used to be discounted, after all, you are not seeing the final locked show, you are seeing something that is still in a state of flux, you are essentially a test audience, and producers would be far clearer in their marketing when a show was in previews. Producers and creatives might hate that their work gets judged early, but this is a reality that the theatre industry not only needs to accept but embrace. However, multiple members of these boards do in-depth smart reviews that allow others to decide if they want to spend their hard earned cash on tickets. And here is an important thing, something I wish more creatives would pay attention to though I do know that a few secretly do.
These people use the chat boards to learn and spread positivity.
I like Patti Murin. I think I've written on this very site about at least one of her performances. And I am not the biggest fan of the theater message boards. So I by no means intend to put down one and exalt the other. In fact, I agree with the majority of what Ms. Murin wrote and applaud her efforts.

Skip to content The simple thought of the theatre chat boards like BroadwayWorld or TheatreBoard is enough to send writers, directors, performers and producers running screaming into the night. Your friends rushed to your side and your tears fell into lots of wine. Looks like online discussion is seen as a bit of a nuisance in parts of the actorly fraternity I find this a bit sad. For full disclosure: I did once write a story for Broadway World. Get some perspective. In some cases it's obvious that someone's acting maliciously and attempting to cause trouble, but if it's obvious to the moderators then it's equally obvious to everyone else and the attempt fails. We get reviews written about us, which other people are allowed to, and overwhelmingly encouraged to, read when they are delivered to their inbox or front doorstep. And sometimes the temptation is just too great. Because now BWW look really responsible and co-operative, and not like some faceless commercial giant enjoying the ad revenue gained from thousands of clicks on their forum. Frequently these posters will suggest cuts, changes, things that can make it better, the whole message board is normally in agreement, so maybe creatives and producers should spend more time listening to what they are saying rather than arguing that they are saying it? Which is probably not the best time to ever look at a message board related to your industry, no matter what industry you're in. A new show is always a beautiful thing no matter the source material. The truth is -- people have used social media and the comments on online sites as a very nasty vehicle. As if only liking very few shows automatically makes you more discerning. I feel bad that such people like Patti, Lindsay, and Rory are attached to this. Take a look at her previous blog post about resolutions she made upon turning However, one of the things the message boards are most notorious for are reviews from the paying public, starting straight away with the first preview performance, and the industry HATES these. Hi, I completely respect your right to an opinion and I know this was a devastating blow. Sort of like Animal Farm. Replies: 9 Views: 1, I generally don't care for slander and malicious gossip, but I sure don't see it as my responsibility to "spread positivity". I really do respect your opinions, and I think every single person has the right to express what they want.
I am sorry, that has interfered... But this theme is very close to me. I can help with the answer. Write in PM.
I am final, I am sorry, but, in my opinion, it is obvious.
You are not right. I can defend the position. Write to me in PM, we will talk.
