It revolves around the character Susumu Kodai Derek Wildstar in the English version and an international crew from Earth, tasked during an interstellar war to go into space aboard the space warship Yamato , derived from the World War II battleship of the same name , in response to a message of aid from the planet Iscandar in order to retrieve a device which is able to reverse the radiation infecting Earth after being bombed by the Gamilas Gamilons. Space Battleship Yamato is one of the most influential anime series in Japan. Its turn toward serious themes and complex storylines influenced future works in the medium, including Gundam , Evangelion , and Macross , in addition to influencing the style of video games such as Space Invaders. The first ideas for what would eventually be Space Battleship Yamato began in by producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki , but the project underwent a number of revisions and overhauls before settling on the final design. It was initially planned to be a tokusatsu , and Nishizaki was inspired to create something set in space after reading Methuselah's Children. Eiichi Yamamoto believed this was because of the way in which they depicted people being able to survive in extreme circumstances, and this influenced the creation of Yamato.

The planet bombs altered the atmosphere and irradiated the planetary surface, causing the complete destruction of the planet's biosphere. The Gamilas then started what is believed to be their first step in terraforming —preparing the Earth to be inhabited by themselves—by introducing plant life that was lethal to any life on Earth. With mankind facing extinction, the United Nations started planning for a small colony of humans to leave Earth in an attempt at the survival of humanity, called the Izumo Plan. Space Battleship Yamato is one of the most highly regarded and influential franchises in anime history. Continually building upon its storyline with new twists and turns, not to mention containing very mature themes for its time, the series was instrumental in pushing anime into the medium that it is today. It's also connected, in one way or another, to several other classic anime titles from that time period. Newer entries in Yamato have been sporadic throughout the decades, with most of them acting as sequels to the original series. More recently, however, the show has been rebooted for a new generation, even bearing a name that Western fans might recognize.
It is also known to English-speaking audiences as Space Cruiser Yamato ; an English- dubbed and partly edited version of the series was broadcast on North American and Australian television as Star Blazers. Conceived in by producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki , the project underwent heavy revisions. Originally intended to be an outer-space variation on Lord of the Flies , the project at first was titled "Asteroid Ship Icarus " and had a multinational teenage crew journeying through space in a hollowed-out asteroid in search of the planet Iscandar. There was to be much discord among the crew; many of them acting purely out of self-interest and for personal gain. The enemy aliens were originally called Rajendora. When Leiji Matsumoto was brought onto the project, many of these concepts were discarded. It is his art direction, ship designs and unique style that accredit him in fans' eyes as the true creator of Space Battleship Yamato , even though Nishizaki retains legal rights to the work. The first season began airing in Japan on October 6, Set in the year , an alien race known as the " Gamilas " unleash radioactive meteorite bombs on Earth , rendering the planet's surface uninhabitable. Earth's space fleet is hopelessly outclassed by the Gamilas and all seems lost until a message capsule from a mysterious crashed spaceship is retrieved on Mars.

Now over 40 years old, the original Space Battleship Yamato is often cited as the point at which Japanese animation evolved from glorified toy commercials to an art form capable of sophisticated storytelling. Before Gundam , before Hideaki Anno and the generation of creators who grew up on anime, Yamato forged the way toward modern Japanese pop culture. Right away, Yamato opens with a battle between the outmatched Earth fleet and a seemingly indomitable opponent known as the Gamilans. Once we cut to Mars and the focus shifts to brash young protagonist Kodai, readers finally get their bearings and learn about the dire situation humanity finds itself in. On the cusp of total extinction, the human race has no hope except for a mysterious message from an advanced alien race promising salvation. To say that artist Michio Murakawa is a fan of the series is a vast understatement. He was hired to draw Yamato on the strength of his high-quality dojinshi of the Yamato franchise.

In the mids, Nishizaki attempted to create a sequel to Yamato , set hundreds of years after the original. They mastered the Gainax ending before Gainax. A message from the alien queen Starsha informs them that her people can save the Earth from radiation, all while giving the human race the means to get there. The White Comet Empire story is more traditional Matsumoto, with lots of gears and dials all over the page. Debuting in Japanese cinemas on April 7, , is a remake of the series.
