While it would be nice to be able to laugh a little more acoustic-guitar versions of David Bowie classics sung in Portuguese only go so far , the film delivers a metaphor for the death of romantic and robust boyhood imagination with great subtlety. It may be impossible to love The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, but it's remarkably easy to drown in its sea of eccentricity. The resulting film is as much an exploration of fading youth and mortality as it is a dazzling dive into the wonders of the ocean. The Life Aquatic deals more skilfully in majestic moments than human drama, though, and it's these that will stick with you. Anderson's film is not an entirely successful effort, but there is something liberating and deeply affecting about his method of work and that of his collaborators.

Grand and messy and a little all over the place, T he Life Aquatic wrestles with some of the most primal questions of existence and realizes the joy is not in finding answers, but in joining the fight. It understands that life has a way of puncturing your bubbles, no matter how well-constructed they are. This is a film about one of the oldest ideas in the American movie canon, an idea Anderson has returned to often: the strained relationship between fathers and sons. But it finds its own territory within that well-trod country — and it gets there via stop-motion sharks. Slice-of-life films drop you into a community of characters — a family, a small town, a group of friends — and then hang out with them for a period of time as something in their lives changes or they go through a rough patch. Their pleasures come almost entirely from character exploration. Something like The Big Chill is a great slice-of-life film; recent Best Picture winner Moonlight stacks three on top of each other. On the surface, this is a movie about a renowned documentarian and oceanographer obviously inspired by Jacques Cousteau whose best friend and filmmaking partner was just devoured by a shark. Vowing to kill the beast to avenge his friend and make his best movie yet, he sets sail. Yet this dramatic setup ends up being almost entirely beside the point. The movie lives in that space.

These 7 words are painfully obvious.

The film stars Bill Murray as Steve Zissou, an eccentric oceanographer who sets out to exact revenge on the "jaguar shark" that ate his partner Esteban. Zissou is both a parody of and homage to French diving pioneer Jacques Cousteau , to whom the film is dedicated. Seu Jorge has a minor part, but contributes heavily to the film's soundtrack. It was filmed in and around Naples , Ponza , and the Italian Riviera. The film was released to mixed reviews and was a box office flop.

My rational mind informs me that this movie doesn't work. Yet I hear a subversive whisper: Since it does so many other things, does it have to work, too? Can't it just exist? Yes, but isn't that better than half-hearted whimsy, or no whimsy at all? I can't recommend it, but I would not for one second discourage you from seeing it. To begin with, it has a passage of eerie beauty, in which the oceanographer Steve Zissou Bill Murray and his shipmates glide in a submarine past an undersea panorama of wondrous and delightful creatures. They are seeking the dreaded jaguar shark that ate Steve's beloved partner, and when they find it, well, they fall silent and just regard it, because it's kind of beautiful. Zissou is, we learn, the auteur of a series of increasingly uneventful undersea documentaries, in which the momentum is sliding down a graph that will intersect in the foreseeable future with a dead standstill. Zissou himself seems to be in the later stages of entropy and may become one of those Oliver Sacks people who just sit there on the stairs for decades, looking at you. His crew would seem slack-witted to SpongeBob.
