We said cheaper, not cheap though, so does their performance match up to the price tag? And how do they compare against the best road bike wheels on the market? Before you roll your eyes and think they should have called this tech WTF not NSW Nest Speed Weaponry - The Nest being the Indianapolis research hub of Zipp where NSW wheels are designed and still made the research on humpback whale fins dates back to US Navy studies in published , backed up by later research at Harvard and first applied to experimental wind turbine blades before going commercial on Canadian industrial ventilation fans.

Zipp has long been a leader in aero refinement of cycling components that have relied heavily on time spent inside a wind tunnel. So, we found it striking that they have just released a new, high-end wheel that is less aerodynamic. In a call with Zipp, we were told that given its less-than-impressive tunnel results a 1-watt gain in aero resistance that just a few years ago this latest version of the NSW wheel would never have made it to market. So, how is a wheel that is less aero offering better performance? This time around they partnered with a few other companies to test outside the lab in real-world environments, which correlate ride quality with performance as tire and air-volume data have become better understood. This led to a sawtooth rim profile that is significantly wider where it meets the tire and actually a bit narrower as it trails off to the spokes. The wider 28mm external width is matched to a 23mm internal width and hookless bead. This is possible because the new NSW is disc brake-specific and not restricted by the constraining needs of rim brakes. The system is tubeless-specific and has a max tire pressure rating of 73 psi. Zipp said the weight savings came in the most important area—the rim—and that hub and spoke weights actually increased slightly. That amount of dynamic weight removed while maintaining aero advantage is impressive. The previous NSW rear hub used a magnetic freewheel system that worked well, but was fairly complex and time-consuming to produce and service. In an effort to reduce friction while coasting, as well as simplifying production and reliability, the rear hub has a new engagement system. For setup we opted for a 28mm tire, even though Zipp does indicate that the narrower 25mm tire is more aerodynamic.

While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything except locks but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value — with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price. Good scores are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad. The Zipp NSW Carbon Tubeless Disc brake wheelset sits at the top of the Zipp pile in terms of price and performance, and feature the sawtooth rim design that is designed to be as aerodynamic as possible without hindering crosswind stability.

We have known this for some time, and many brands seem hesitant to say it out loud, but Zipp has clearly moved on from old-school braking. Close menu. Managing this is crucial to stability. The rims measure 23mm internally and 28mm across the external width for both front and rear wheels, unlike many brands who have opted for different rim profiles and widths between front and rear. Having now used the wheels for a further 3,km without discovering any further filings, I am confident that this was a bi-product of manufacture and not premature wearing of any internal components.
