The Legend of Zelda 's timeline may be difficult to make sense of in many respects, but that doesn't make it pointless to try. There are a number of games in the series that are direct sequels and prequels to previous titles, making the Zelda timeline imperative in understanding how some of the most seemingly unrelated games interconnect. The latest game in the series, Tears of the Kingdom , takes on a unique position in that its story is technically both a sequel and a prequel to 's Breath of the Wild. Placing TOTK , and its past time period, in the Zelda Timeline can seem frustratingly complicated at first, but it's not impossible. As players will learn by collecting Memories in Tears of the Kingdom , the game's story follows two main timelines — the present, and the past. However, players don't know exactly how far back the past events take place, with clues only letting on that they happened many generations ago. This leaves things ambiguous because there is no definite connection to any specific timeline split Downfall, Child, or Adult made. That being the case, this leads many fans to conclude that BOTW is either in its own separate parallel timeline entirely, or it exists at the end of every timeline after a point of convergence. Accepting that BOTW and TOTK take place on a completely separate timeline makes talking about the rest of the timeline pointless, so the only logical way to place BOTW and TOTK on the official timeline is to conclude that they take place so long after every other game that the timelines are no longer separated, re-converging back into one.
