When Duel Monsters world champion Seto Kaiba kidnaps Yugi's grandfather to acquire the rare Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, Yugi must defeat him to save his grandfather and get the cards back. When Maximillion Pegasus, the creator of Duel Monsters, triumphs over Yugi in a game of real magic, he claims the soul of Yugi's grandfather, Solomon. Yugi must travel to the Duelist Kingdom to rescue Solomon, and he is joined by his friends Tea, Tristan and Joey, who wants to save his ill sister. Yugi has to learn fast when he and his friends arrive on Pegasus's island, where the rules of the deadly duels are unlikely any Yugi has seen before. Yugi continues to battle Weevil Underwood, whose cheating and lying seem to be giving him the advantage when he is able to summon a gigantic moth. Joey undergoes his first duel on the island against Mai Valentine, a professional duelist with an uncanny ability to predict the cards she will draw.

The first season of Yu-Gi-Oh! Crawford renamed Maximillion Pegasus in the English adaptation. The last ten episodes deal with the aftermath of Yugi's duel with Pegasus, including several filler episodes featuring original storylines not seen in the manga. Between September 24, and February 22, , Funimation released twenty DVD sets for the season: twelve sets containing three episodes, three containing four episodes, one with two episodes, one containing all forty-nine episodes and the last three containing uncut versions of the first nine episodes. One day, Yugi receives an ancient Egyptian artifact known as the Millennium Puzzle from his grandfather. After solving the puzzle, he is possessed by the spirit of the ancient pharaoh, Atem. Together, they must work to defeat enemies and protect the world from the dangerous power of the Shadow Realm. Throughout the series, Yugi and his friends face off against a variety of opponents, each with their own unique skills and strategies. The show's signature battles involve the use of Duel Monsters, a game in which players summon monsters with different powers and abilities to battle each other.
