Marienne went to Paris to start a new life with her daughter Juliette Dallas Skye , using her artistic skills to pay their bills. After promising to leave her daughter just for a few days, Marienne goes to an art fair in London, where she crosses paths with Joe. Instead, he spends all his free time obsessing over Rhys Montrose, the writer of an autobiography who shows even people who did a lot of damage can still get a second chance and turn things for the better.

The voiceover this time belongs to Marienne, who will describe her situation in the allegorical fairy tale language she would use to explain something to her very young child. Also, unfortunately, this episode treats us to a bad You special: watching a woman get tortured and go insane for what feels like forever, for sort of no reason, because we could glean all the information we needed about this in a much more concise and less gratuitous fashion. With the help of Hallucination Rhys, Joe pieces together what he actually did to Marienne: put a sedative in her coffee when she was about to get on the train, then kidnap her. Apparently, Joe became fixated on Rhys shortly after arriving in London. Shadow Joe tells Marienne he wants to give their relationship another chance. Personally, I would prefer to be knocked out for this portion of the proceedings! Unless these are breadcrumbs for some future escape re: feigning unconsciousness? A recapper can hope! Marienne uses her hard-won consciousness to attempt a last-minute escape, but all she gets for her trouble is a broken arm. Instead, he bashes his head so hard I guess he swaps personalities?! Most of this episode is just Marienne being tormented, and I will not linger on it here. Marienne paces around a lot, makes origami birds from takeout trash, and loses her ability to imagine that she is speaking to her daughter.

A ritzy weekend getaway doubles as a chance for Joe to hunt down his elusive stalker. Personally, I would prefer to be knocked out for this portion of the proceedings!

It's possible that fans will be divided on this reveal and it will change how they feel about the season in general. However, You still manages to shock four seasons in, which is definitely no small feat given the show's reputation for plot twists and dark storytelling. What episode does so well is give viewers the kind of twist they have been waiting for while still telling a moving story and offering up the character development that You is celebrated for. This feels like it's both obvious and also a shock, which is what makes it so smart. The best thriller series like You have big twists but they have to make sense. It does seem logical that Joe has been the one behind the murders, given his gruesome and disturbing history. You wanted viewers to wonder if Joe really had become a kinder person and if his new life in London could allow him to forget the evil acts he committed in the past.

Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers from You Season 4, Episode 8. Welp, it happened. Well, technically he was a real person, but the Rhys that had been talking to Joe this whole time was nothing more than a dark projection of his fractured mind. It was the boldest twist You had ever attempted, but although the show tried its best to explain away all the inconsistencies the big reveal created, a few plot holes remained. Imaginary Rhys pointed out that he and Joe only spoke one-on-one, and he never interacted with anyone else. Like, if Joe was just talking to himself repeatedly in front of the Sundry House crew, why did none of them ever point out how weird that would be? Imaginary Rhys tried his best to make some sense out of Joe locking himself up in a basement and then setting it on fire, but it just felt like a reach.

A series of flashbacks showcase that Joe only ever talked to Rhys alone, and that Rhys never spoke to the friend group or interacted with them leading up to now … because he was never really there. At about the time Joe was invited to Hampsie, he stopped bringing by supplies — leaving Marienne to survive on very little food and water, her body deteriorating now. After attempting to help Phoebe, Kate faces her father -- and hard truths. Torn between his dark side and good intentions, Joe works to right his wrongs. Phoebe tells Kate the engagement party will actually be a surprise wedding, as they are in a rush to seal the deal. Marienne tells Nadia that she cannot let Joe find out that Nadia knows about Marienne because then she will be in danger, girl. However, episode 8 rewinds and tells the story from Marienne's perspective, sharing that Joe drugged her and kidnapped her, putting her in the cage that fans had been waiting to see. However, it could also be argued that it's smart that You decided to do something different this time around, as it's impossible to say that it's telling the same story over and over again.
