The first girls division was introduced in the season as a 'Youth Girls' under 18 division, which had a total of 10 teams participating. In a girls under 12 division was formed, with 5 clubs fielding teams in the division. The 'Youth Girls' division grew to a total of 12 teams, up two from the year before. It had a total of 4 teams participating in its first year. After only 10 teams in the first year of female-only teams in the Yarra Junior Football League, the total spiked to female-only teams in There were female players in the league in , which meant that female-players made up just over a quarter of all players in the league. The Yarra Junior Football League community rallied against the controversial North East Link project, due to the removal of their headquarters, which was in the path of the proposed road. This partnership was formed as a part of an initiative to support grassroots football. Six main projects were announced as part of the partnership, including junior development programs to encourage participation in junior football, sport medical programs and research, fundraising events to raise money, support for talent pathways for junior players through to the elite levels, female football development programs and the development of projects to expand community facilities.

The Yarra Junior Football League YJFL is a dedicated junior football league which provides an opportunity for all boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 18 in the east, north and north east regions of Melbourne to play and develop their skills in well structured and organised competitions, and at their own level. The YJFL seeks to contribute to the community by ensuring all participants and their families feel accepted and catered for, and strives to support, encourage, motivate and guide clubs in applying best practice in the holistic development and welfare of players. Have the best interests and wellbeing of all the children as the central focus, and provide an environment where players, coaches, umpires, officials and parents have an enjoyable experience. Encourage and promote participation of all children in the YJFL region in club football through schools and Auskick centres. Provide a well organised and structured football competition, including competitions which cater for the skill levels and development needs of all the children through grading of competitions. Provide opportunities for all players and umpires to develop their football skills and for the most talented players and umpires to develop and progress on the AFL pathway to the highest level they can achieve. Support clubs to provide caring, safe, respectful and non-discriminating environments for their families that recognise the diversity of the region and encourage people from all ethnic groups to become involved with AFL football. Provide resources and development opportunities to assist volunteer coaches, administrators and umpires in performing their roles, and encourage all volunteers to maintain the high standards of the YJFL.
