The Lord Mayor and Councillors meet regularly to make decisions about policies, services and important issues. Our city is divided into three Wards, with four Councillors elected from each Ward. The Lord Mayor is elected by voters across all three Wards. A previous Uniting Church Minister, he has been heavily involved in mental health, aged care and homelessness charities and organisations. Countdown gets underway as Wollongong council heads for tight election. Re-opening the Wollongong mall to traffic, introducing a quota system to ensure a supply of affordable housing and removing poker machines from council-owned buildings are among the ideas guaranteed to spark debate as the race for lord mayor heats up. The leading four lord mayoral candidates have put their views on the record as campaigning gets underway in the lead-up to the December 4 local government elections. Many will be watching closely to see if Labor's Tania Brown can defeat incumbent Independent Gordon Bradbery, and whether Labor can reclaim a majority for the first time since when the entire council was sacked. The Illawarra-based Housing Trust recently ranked Wollongong Council just one out of five on its scorecard for dealing with affordable housing as an issue, and Councillor Brown agrees the council should have acted sooner. But Councillor Bradbery said there was only so much that could be done, and to set aside a proportion of all new developments as affordable housing — as had been suggested by some — was not a practical policy. Greens candidate Mithra Cox wants 30 per cent of all new housing developments to be set aside for affordable housing, but feels she has been stymied by other councillors. Another issue firing up Wollongong residents, again, is what to do with the Crown Street Mall in the city centre. Cr Brown wants to re-open part of the mall to traffic, while Cr John Dorahy is a fan of one-way traffic through the city centre.
