By Emily Longeretta. The series, which dropped on Jan.

Spoilers for the series ahead. Season 1 of the show, about a mother, Georgia Brienne Howey , who moves her teenage daughter Ginny Antonia Gentry and her young son, Austin Diesel La Torraca to a small New England town after the mysterious death of her husband, may have been a pandemic hit, but it also got its fair share of criticism. Luckily, season 2 mostly rose to the challenge, specifically where mental health was involved. The first time we see her burn herself is in season 1, episode 2, when, after a particularly overwhelming day, Ginny turns off the light, closes her bedroom door, and takes a lighter to her inner thigh. Scars from past burns are clearly visible, as are angry welts from recent ones. At the time, I hoped that the explicit demonstration of self-harm would lead to a nuanced story about her mental health. It was disappointing, to say the least.

In season 2, as the issue persists, she reaches out to her father for help, and he puts her in therapy. Things do get better for Ginny as the season progresses, but the healing process is hardly ever a straight line. There are bound to be good days and bad days. If you are wondering why Ginny burns herself, we got you covered. Ginny shares a complex relationship with her mother. They clearly love each other, fiercely at that, and a part of Ginny seems to know that her mother has done the best she can for her and her brother under the circumstances. While Georgia could have chosen certain things differently, which would have made things easier for Ginny, in her defense, she has always lived her life on her own terms, never expecting others to help her. Georgia had a horrible childhood, filled with a sense of abandonment and abuse. She wanted to give her children the complete opposite, where they would feel safe and happy. So, she doggedly pursued that vision, not realizing that her actions were inadvertently causing adverse effects on her children. Marcus and Ginny call Georgia a force; she can run through any obstacle in her path and solve any problems with brute determination. While Georgia is great at hiding things, Ginny was always aware that they were poor. When she was 12 years old, she was invited to a birthday party. Because of the constant moving, Ginny never had friends before and never attended any parties. She was so nervous that she ended up changing her dress four times.

Both shows are about the dynamic between a pop culture savvy thirtysomething teen mom and her now-teen daughter living in a tight-knit New England town — and, well, both shows have two "G" words in the title. But while Gilmore is filled with feelings and good old-fashioned family drama, Ginny and Georgia's Scandal -level twists and Degrassi -style soap opera melodrama set it apart from your typical teen fare. Sure, there's a Gilmore Girls -esque vibe to the whole thing — but there are way more cliffhangers, and there's way more Degrassi -style WTF drama than anything that once aired on the WB. This is particularly helped by the fact that three cast members put in time on Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: Next Class — yes, this show filmed in Toronto, how did you guess?
