The mission of the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society has been to be a washougal humane society, permanent presence in Clark County with the purpose of ending euthanasia of adoptable companion animals. Through community education and spay and neuter programs we strive to reduce the numbers of litters born. The Best Friends Network is comprised of thousands of animal welfare groups from every single state, all working to save the lives of pets in their own communities. WCGHS offers meet and greet appointments for families who are interested in adopting! To help eliminate overcrowding and minimize pet stress, WCGHS has moved to appointment-based services for all adoptions. This allows staff to maintain a steady workflow, and provide exceptional customer service for adopters. All adoption appointments require an application to be completed and approved prior to being scheduled. In , pets were adopted and were fostered through the Humane Society. The Humane Society has 11 staff members, many of whom are cross-trained. That is not nearly enough people to care for all the animals, which is why volunteers are so important. Last year, 1, pets were spayed or neutered, 10, pounds of food were distributed to the community and 21 lost pets were reunited with their families. Simeone began volunteering at the Humane Society 11 years ago after her best friend died from cancer. On a bright and early Thursday morning, volunteers Ann Ostrowski and Vicki Barron Sumann were already at work at the cat shelter. Sumann, who has been a volunteer for five years, was shuffling between feeding the cats, cleaning their cages and sweeping the floor. Ostrowski has been volunteering at the cat shelter for two weeks.
