The barrier island behind the lighthouse has nice beaches on the other side that face on the Adriatic, so you are at the edge of the Venice archipelago. These water buses known as vaporettos make it easy to get around Venice inexpensively. They're part of the Venice ACTV transit system, one pass gives you access to regular buses and trams on the mainland as well. In a city with canals in place of roads, it only makes sense that public transportation consists of watercraft. Known as the vaporetti, Venice's water bus system is the city's major form of public transportation. These buses vaporetto is singular, vaporetti is plural take visitors along the main canals, to the outer islands, and around the lagoon. Although often crowded, they are by far the least expensive way to get around other than walking. If you're visiting Venice, sooner or later, you'll find yourself on a vaporetto.

Apart from its highly nostalgic nature, the Vaporetto is the only public transport that exists in Venice. Although the floating city is relatively compact, using the Waterbus service provides a great shortcut, especially when sightseeing exhausts you. Moreover, if you are only in Venice for a day or two, the Vaporetto will help you see as much as possible. It was one of those fantastic moments for us in Venice when we took the vaporetto to the Grand Canal towards Rialto Bridge. San Giorgio Maggiore is just visible left of shot.
