As a Norse mythology inspired survival game, Valheim would of course be incomplete without a selection of boats and longships for you to sail around in. These quintessential Viking vehicles are available in the game; but like most everything else in Valheim, you have to craft them yourself. There are currently three boats you can build in Valheim. Bearing in mind that this is an Early Access game, it's currently unknown whether more will be added later on. These boats are the simple raft , the mid-sized karve , and the impressive longship.

Valheim boats

There are currently three versions of seafaring vessels within Valheim: the Raft , the Karve , and the Longship. Each vessel is significantly faster than its previous version with increased durability, storage space, and player seating. Sailing in Valheim is heavily affected by wind speed and direction. This allows you to transport whatever items you find in this biome into your storage space at home while you keep exploring the region. It would be wasteful to lose any hidden objects and buried treasures found along the shores of a beach or deep underwater. The Ocean is surprisingly limited, but you can still find important items like Chitin , Serpent Scales , and Serpent Meat to craft better gear. The sea does not have as many secrets as other locations, like the Black Forest or Mistlands biome in Valheim.

In Valheim you will find your island surrounded by the ocean and beyond that, there are other islands to explore. You cannot simply swim all the way to another island as this would likely end up with your character drowning or worse, being eaten by Sea Serpents. The best way to hop from one island to another or even transfer items from one place to another via the seas is to use a boat. There are currently 3 types of Boats in Valheim and each of them is a boat upgrade from another whereas you start out with the Raft, proceed to the Karve, and later on end up with the Longship. Each boat recipe is unlocked as you progress through the game and require different materials depending on how better they are. The Raft is the first means of water transportation that you have in the game and is relatively slow and hard to control, especially against the wind. The Karve is a faster boat which actually is built like a boat unlike the Raft and provides a good amount of speed that can allow you to safely escape Sea Serpents.
