The UTMB was filled with question marks about who would end up standing on the top step of the podium, both for the men and women. If one were to ignore everything that Courtney Dauwalter pre-race and post-race interviews had previously done this summer, she would have been the odds-on favorite. But just seven weeks removed from setting a new course record at the Hardrock , which was just three weeks after doing the same at the Western States , no one knew how her seemingly super-human body and mind would hold up. But really, in hindsight, it was silly for anyone to worry about how the G. Dauwalter once again showed that she is in a league of her own, leading the race from 32 kilometers in and never looking back. Her runaway victory resulted in a time of

Dauwalter led from early on, and with her in such good form, it was clear that, barring accident or injury, all bets were off over the ultimate winner. But in every other way, this was the running event of the year- if not the decade. As the crowds started to build later in the race as the runners emerged from the night, the atmosphere was electric with everyone crowding together to witness Dauwalter close in on history. Moving towards Trient km the frenzy reached new levels. The crowds near enough surrounded her, parting like the red sea to allow her to pass but not wanting to move too far away from this master of ultrarunning. There were flares, there were banners and there in the middle of the throng was Dauwalter, the number one bib attached to her Tour de France style yellow jersey as she travelled to her coronation as the Queen of ultrarunning in Chamonix. The frenzy continued in the small French town, which over the course of 20 years has become the home of ultrarunning itself. But the celebration around Dauwalter makes sense when you begin to appreciate the sheer scale of what she has now accomplished.

No American man had ever won the race in its 20 year history, but Walmsley has finally broken the barrier to claim the title at his fifth attempt. Jim Walmsley is undeniably one of the greatest ultrarunners in the world, but one thing alluded him and indeed all US male ultrarunners- the UTMB. In he was fifth, in he was a DNF, in he was another DNF and then in , having moved to France entirely to prepare for the race, he fell to a fourth place finish after having looked like he was finally going to win it. That race made it feel like there was a curse around American men at the UTMB- but Walmsley redoubled his efforts. Over the past year, he has dedicated himself almost entirely to the UTMB. Almost hibernating in rural France, he spoke little to media over the past year and raced in only a handful of minor events since he missed out in It meant that Walmsley was an unknown factor heading into the UTMB- but now everyone will know him as the champion. From early on, it was clear that there was a leading group of four who were serious challengers to the race. Evans particularly was touted as the pre-race favourite.
