It was formed in by a merger of the American Bowling Congress —the original codifier of all tenpin bowling standards, rules and regulations from onwards; the Women's International Bowling Congress —founded in , as the female bowlers' counterpart to the then all-male ABC; the Young American Bowling Alliance , and USA Bowling. It has approximately 3, local associations across the US serving over 2 million members. Among its duties and responsibilities to these members are: [2]. Historically, the membership of the ABC was all male white males only in — , but beginning in women were permitted to join. As of , there are Hall of Fame members in five categories: [8]. Recognizes those who have had noteworthy performances in one of the USBC national tournaments. The induction ceremony is held annually in the spring.

ABC, founded in , was a predominantly male organization of nearly 1. WIBC, founded in , was exclusively a women's organization with nearly 1. YABA, founded in , served bowlers younger than age 22 and had nearly , members. USA Bowling started in with the purpose of having a single organization represent the sport as the national governing body and support the national team. Merging the four organizations together would create one organization to serve more than three million bowlers nationwide. While all of the organizations had great histories, they provided many of the same programs and services to their constituents.
