Increasing our knowledge of Physics, using the scientific method to make observations and test hypotheses is essential to unlocking the secrets of the universe. Energy is one of the most fundamental elements of the universe. Throughout history, man has endeavored to expose, understand, and explain how and why things work. This drive to expand our understanding eventually led to the development of the scientific method and what is commonly considered to be the king of the sciences, Physics. The effects of energy on the physical world are of great interest to Physicists. The scientific method was developed during the seventeenth century. It is based on collaborative efforts of the great scientists and mathematicians who lived during that period such as Francis Bacon, Galileo Galilee, Johannes Kepler, and Rene' Descartes. These men realized that true knowledge must be based on empirical observation and verified by experimentation. Recently, physicists have been searching for a unifying theory to bring all of the fields of Physics together under a single umbrella theory expressed as a short equation. This so called unifying field theory will usher in a new era in physics and greatly increase our understanding of the workings of the universe Physics is the king of science, and Sir Issac Newton is the king of Physics. Physics deals with matter, motion, force, and energy. The meaning of static equilibrium can be explored by first examining the definition of equilibrium. Equilibrium means that an object is at rest or that the objects center of mass moves at constant velocity relative to the observer.

The PHYS 2 sequence uses advanced calculus and is intended for physical science and engineering majors and those biological science majors with strong mathematical aptitude as it uses advanced calculus. The PHYS 4 sequence uses advanced calculus and is intended for all physics majors and for students with an interest in physics. This five-quarter sequence covers the same topics as the PHYS 2 sequence, but it covers these topics more slowly and in more depth.

PBs are not formal parts of classes, so students cannot be required to participate in these sessions and the ability to succeed in the class cannot be dependent upon participation in these sessions. It addresses topics on fossil fuel, heat engines, solar energy, nuclear energy, energy conservation, transportation, air pollution and global effects. Continuation of PHYS 4A covering forced and damped oscillations, fluid statics and dynamics, waves in elastic media, sound waves, heat and the first law of thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases, Brownian motion, Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, second law of thermodynamics. Recommended preparation: an introductory course in biology is helpful but not necessary.

Quantum Fields I 4 Introduction to field quantization for relativistic scalar, Fermion, and gauge fields. Topics include defining life; the origin, development, and fundamental characteristics of life on Earth; searches for life elsewhere in the solar system and other planetary systems; space exploration; and identifying extraterrestrial intelligence. Recommended preparation: familiarity with probabilities at the level of undergraduate statistical mechanics and major cellular processes; basic knowledge of information theory. Growth and decay of adiabatic and isocurvature density fluctuations. Research is conducted under the supervision of a physics faculty member. The PHYS 4 sequence is calculus based and provides a solid foundation for the core upper-division physics program. Information processing by nervous system through physical reasoning and mathematical analysis. Electric fields, magnetic fields, DC and AC circuitry. Compact X-ray sources and transient phenomena, including X-ray and g-ray bursts. Methods in Quantitative Biology 2 Critical analysis of methods used to collect and analyze biological data.
