We are an organic synthesis lab fascinated by enantioselective catalysis, novel mechanisms, and natural product s. Organic molecules make up everything around us, including our food, medicine, and fuels. The ability to design and make molecules is thus an essential pursuit. By inventing tools to construct molecular architecture, we aid the search for better therapeutics, sustainable materials, and renewable energies. Our ultimate mission is to build a better world, one chemist at a time.

He did two years of postdoctoral work at the Stanford Research Institute before joining the founding faculty at UCI in the Fall of During his tenure as a faculty member, Hal served two terms as Chair of the Department of Chemistry and from he served as Dean of the School of Physical Sciences. Hal's research interests were in organic chemistry with the main goal of discovering new methods to synthesize high-value molecules. Hal's early research at UCI centered on the complex chemical reactions of hydroxy- and azidoquinones. One of the products of such transformations were cyanoketenes, highly reactive small molecules that could be employed to fashion many molecules including beta-lactams, the reactive unit of penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics.
