Tyson Fury is still the king of the mountain, but just barely. In a fight many expected him to walk through en route to his unification bout with Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday night in Saudi Arabia, Fury was bloodied, forced to get off the mat and outscore a debuting Francis Ngannou en route to a split decision win. Fury, who holds the WBC and lineal heavyweight crowns, was forced to fight on the outside for much of the fight as Ngannou pressed into his face and made life miserable. Fury has long utilized his height and weight in his career to lean on opponents in the clinch and wear them down. Ngannou, a former UFC heavyweight champion, was able to muscle Fury in the clinch, at times landing inside shots and sometimes throwing Fury off of him. While an Ngannou punch bloodied Fury early, the most stunning moment of the bout came in the third round when Ngannou landed a left hand that caught Fury and dropped him to the canvas for a knockdown.

Tyson Fury got more than he bargained for on Saturday night. What played out was stunning to everyone who expected a glorified sparring match like when Floyd Mayweather Jr. Ngannou was in the fight from the opening bell as he ate most of Fury's big punches and returned fire. The native of Cameroon even dropped Fury with a left hand in the third round. He failed to capitalize on much of his success, however, as Fury seemed to do the better boxing moves in each round to win on scorecards. In the end, it was a valiant effort from a debutant who lost by split decision and never buckled in the face of adversity. Can't get enough boxing and MMA? Fury entered Riyadh with an unbeaten professional record , while ex- UFC champion Ngannou was making his boxing debut. Fury, 35, did not defend his WBC heavyweight title in the fight, which went for all 10 scheduled rounds and saw Ngannou, 37, arguably do enough to beat the boxer. The Cameroonian dropped the Briton with a left hook in Round 3, stunning those in attendance and the wider combat-sports world. Ngannou continued to outbox Fury for much of the bout, only to be denied a victory when the scorecards were read aloud. Tyson Fury was hugely fortunate to avoid the first professional defeat of his career as he earned a controversial points win to survive an almighty scare against Francis Ngannou. It was the former UFC champion who dominated the crossover bout in Riyadh, dropping Fury in the third round and appearing to be the much stronger, and more comfortable, fighter in the ring over a barely believable ten rounds. Fury suffered a graze to his forehead in the early stages and swelling began to appear below his left eye as the fight went on, Ngannou able to overpower the WBC champion on the inside and boxing superbly at range in his first ever boxing bout. It meant Fury seemingly needed a stoppage in the final round to avoid what would have been the biggest shock in boxing history, and one that would have left plans for an undisputed showdown between Fury and Oleksandr Usyk at the end of the year in ruins. Whether a bruised Fury is ready for that proposed December 23 date remains to be seen, but that it is even an option is down to a very debatable set of scorecards. Fury seemed to be well behind as the final bell sounded, Ngannou celebrating with far more vigour, yet it was the Gypsy King who earned a split-decision win to boos around the arena, as one judge scored it to Ngannou and the other two went and for Fury. Tyson Fury beat Francis Ngannou via split decision. Oleksandr Usyk as stunned as the rest of the world as he watched on at ringside.

Tyson Fury retained his WBC and lineal heavyweight championship with a one-sided beating of Derek Chisora in a mismatch that was finally stopped by the referee in Round 10 on Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Chisora, who has now lost to Fury three times, never landed a punch of consequence but absorbed plenty of such shots from "The Gypsy King" in a bout that looked like it surely should have been stopped much sooner. Chisora's trademark toughness was on display throughout in what amounted to a tuneup bout for Fury, who is in talks to meet Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship in springtime in Saudi Arabia. After four months, he decided to return and announced his fight against Chisora. Fury also defeated Chisora by unanimous decision in and by round TKO in
