Turn closet into mudroom
With two in school now, and four in footwear, we have quickly run out of space for book bags, turn closet into mudroom, shoes, and coats. The wheels starting turning, and I took a little look at my own coat closet.
Right when you walk into our house we have this coat closet. I had been wanting to put in a DIY mudroom closet somewhere that we could sit to put our shoes on, hang coats, etc… but I had never taken on a DIY project this big. Quite frankly… power tools scare me a bit. If you are reading thing and considering a mudroom closet makeover… I promise you can do it if you follow these steps! The whole process took me about 4 days. This project requires a ton of planning.
Turn closet into mudroom
I am back today with a little more information about how we converted our hallway coat closet into a mudroom. Great timing huh? It was madness but it was done in time for the holiday and it has worked out great. It kind of makes me break out in hives just to see it. Much better! I try to just keep the ones we are wearing every day in here, I admit that it will be nice when it warms up to have less hanging on the hooks. He built the basic shelves then added trim and molding so everything looked nice. I have been asked about the doors that were on the closet. See how the doors opened in to each other? So while my kids were grabbing backpacks and coats inevitably one would be heading out the door while the other was trying to get in the closet and a battle would ensue. Now they just reach in and grab what they want and go. I still have the hooks on the left side of the hall for guests, purses etc. As I mentioned in the first post, I spent many hours trying to find the right baskets. I wish they were a little taller, but I can just tip these down to grab what we need out of them so that is kind of nice in a lazy-girl sort of way. I still plan to add some prettier accessories, like a pretty dog food container and will probably add some new larger baskets to go under the bench where the kids store their shoes.
Measure twice or 3 times! We used the brad gun and Liquid Nail to attach the panels. I have a top shelf that is also out of sight, similar to what you mentioned in your criteria 4 above.
In our second home in Virginia with 2 young kids, having a functional entryway mudroom was a must-have space in our home. We needed a place to put all the gear we used in a 4-season climate snow boots, summer hats, and more! So we turned the coat closet into a mini mudroom using the same method as the DIY closet mudroom in our second house. Keep reading to see our entryway closet makeover in both our second and third homes! That said, keep reading through the end to see how we updated the mudroom in our Second house because we went through stages with the update to make it more affordable.

Follow me on Instagram and YouTube! The cost went toward the wood and coat hooks. We had paint leftover from another project and used an existing bench. Those galvanized storage bins were indestructible though and totally worth the extra cost! However, I want to work our way around this house replacing the baseboard since the previous owners had a cat or dog that destroyed the baseboard in some areas.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Liberty Hardware. I hate clutter. I twitch at the thought of disorganized chaos. This closet under our stairs is the only hidden space in the entire downstairs except for kitchen cabinets.

I have been asked about the doors that were on the closet. When all the trim is in place, use caulk to fill in the gaps, especially where the shelving meets the wall. The wood pieces were attached by toggle bolts designed to support a lot of weight and then the shelf boards were screwed in from the top. What about you? So I chose a different paint color for each entryway in all three of our homes. I drew out a diagram on a scrap piece of paper and took a bunch of measurements. We also put beads of caulk on the underside of the trim, just to reinforce it. We did the top and bottom first, and then the middle shelf. I ended up screwing through the front of this board because it was easier so I just used wood filler to fill in the holes made by the screws. We removed the door for a couple of reasons. I sanded flat once it dried. Screw them into the studs using 2 screws per stud for extra support. You will want to locate the studs.
This is a practical and stylish solution. The first step is to empty the closet completely. Remove all the clothes, shoes, and other items stored in the closet.
This is so that you can attach your boards together from the inside instead of having to screw from the outside of the wood. Click here to see it. We used the brad gun and Liquid Nail to attach the panels. We use the mudroom hooks to hang jackets, purses, backpacks, hats, keys, and more. This will make it easier than trying to get in all the areas after the whole thing is built. We attached trim pieces to the front of the three shelves with Liquid Nails, as well as the top of the beadboard on the side walls. Attach the wood with screws. The wheels starting turning, and I took a little look at my own coat closet. You should have some basic woodworking skills, education, and tools to complete this project. Well done! This was just the start of a much bigger project to turn this closet into a mudroom. Save Save. This is FAB! Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
I apologise, but, in my opinion, you are not right. I am assured. Let's discuss it. Write to me in PM, we will talk.
Between us speaking, I would address for the help to a moderator.
Hardly I can believe that.
