As long as fans come together at the ballpark and new stars continue to revolutionize the game, the debate over how to rank the best Major League Baseball players in history will never end. With no truly objective way to compare players from different eras or even on different teams or at different positions, there's no one right answer. Based on career WAR, Hall of Fame status, peak performance and overall contributions to the game, we selected an initial pool of more than players from both the major leagues and Negro Leagues, dating back to the late 19th century, plus a few of today's biggest stars. From there, we asked dozens of ESPN editors and writers to contribute to a balloting system that pits players from the list against each other in head-to-head voting. MLB has gifted fans an unprecedented crop of young stars capable of etching their names among baseball royalty. Perhaps history will one day prop these burgeoning studs alongside the game's all-time greats. If Mike Trout and Clayton Kershaw continue along their current trajectories, they will eventually merit prominent billing among the best ever to play the game. For now, none of these young pups have accomplished enough to join iconic names like Ruth, Mays, Aaron and Cobb. They also have a long road ahead before catching up to underappreciated superstars from the early 20th century, who substituted fence-clearing pop with elite contact, plate discipline, baserunning, gap power and defense.
Despite what some football fans may say, baseball remains our national pastime, and it has as rich a history as anything in our pop culture. There have been some truly gifted athletes who have taken the diamond over the years, and what follows is my attempt to name the greatest players in MLB history. Comparing players across eras is never easy, nor is comparing position players to pitchers, but I've tried my best to fairly gauge them against one another. As for the Steroid Era, it's a part of the game's history and can't simply be ignored. For the sake of this list, those players suspected of using PEDs are judged simply on their production on the field, tainted or not. Obviously, a certain amount of subjectivity goes into a list like this, and I don't expect everyone to agree.
