Tig welder setup
Becoming a welder takes quite a bit of practice, and that includes setting up the welding machine. Certain machines are better for certain methods, so knowing the nuances of each system is important. In fact, tig welder setup, your next step is installing the designated collet before screwing the back-end cap into place.
TIG welding requires a slightly different safety setup than other arc welding processes. Obviously, you should still wear proper welding apparel and boots to protect yourself if the molten piece of metal does drop on you. You will also need gloves for TIG welding. So, using goatskin gloves works better for TIG. They shield your hands from the hot arc, but they offer improved finger dexterity for better TIG torch maneuverability. Since TIG welding allows very low amperage output as low as 5A on some welders , the TIG welding helmet must be sensitive enough to auto-darken on such a low-powered arc. The TIG is an arc welding process.

Tungsten Inert Gas TIG Welding is the ultimate in welding, it takes a lot of practice and you need specific welding equipment to do it well. It's more costly to get into than other welding processes. This welder will only be able to weld mild or stainless steel but is a really inexpensive way to dip your toes in it to get some practice with the hand eye coordination needed to do TIG weld. To TIG weld aluminum an AC power source is needed as DC power can cause too much penetration and the AC power alternates the current to provide a cleaning action and there are other reasons that you can look up. We call this type of TIG welder "Scratch Start" because to initiate the arc for welding, the electrode needs to be "scratched" or striked against the work piece to start. Expensive welding machines use either lift start or high frequency to initiate the arc. However there are times when even on the fancy welding machines scratch start is still used such as when welding on or around sensitive electronics. Lastly with this type of setup, there is no foot peddle to control the power of the weld, this can be important as when you start welding the metal will start heating up and there is no way to turn down the amps to give precise control. The biggest cost to this setup is the bottle of argon. Note: I do not recommend going out and buying everything to build your own TIG welder as the cost is better put towards a proper welder like a MIG welder but if you have an existing stick welder already it's worth trying this. So the setup is fairly simple. The TIG torch will have a standard connector that will fit into most compact type welders like I have in the pictures. The ground clamp for the welder will be connected to the positive side instead of the negative. This is called DCEN direct current electrode negative , a setup like this results in less penetration but a higher deposition rate. To the argon regulator connect the hose of the WP torch, you might need to either find the proper fittings to connect it or cut off the existing fitting and fit the hose directly to the regulator using a barbed fitting.
Back to YesWelder. Back purging is the process of shielding the back of your weld from carbide precipitation your metal reacting to the atmosphere.
The basic information on this page should be a good starting point apart from for specific joints where alternative set up is detailed in the relevant tutorial page. For welding steel the tungsten should be ground to a long point with the taper length about 2 or 3 times the diameter of the tungsten. See DC Electrode Preparation. The long taper and sharp tip improve arc stability. For a butt weld or open corner weld the stick out would be about mm. Setting the tungsten stick out for fillet welds is covered on the fillet weld page.
So, how do you set up a TIG welder for mild steel? Just looking to weld mild steel, not sure which process to use yet? Check out my article about MIG welding mild steel. Might be worth checking out to get a full picture of how to do the best job for your specific project. Plus, TIG is a bit different when compared to other welding processes for steel because of how we create the arc and add the filler material during TIG welding differs. You need to use two hands when TIG welding because one hand uses the TIG torch that creates the arc, and your other hand adds the filler metal as you are welding joints a feeder pen can be immensely helpful, especially for beginners and infrequent welders. However, when it comes to welding things like mild steel, TIG welding is also very versatile.

In the world of welding, Gas tungsten Arc Welding is considered the gold standard for producing clean, precise, and visually appealing welds.

TIG welding allows a greater variety of metals to be welded than other forms of welding. You can make dry runs as many times as you need to feel comfortable with the motion before starting an actual weld. TIG Welding Basics 5. YesWelder Jun 24, Special Offers. Gloves, auto-darkening helmet and a suitable cotton based jacket are essential to keep safe. TIG Menu Ad 1. Note: Gas pre-flow time is fixed at 0. A good starting point for a tungsten stickout is to limit the stickout to the diameter of the ceramic cup. There are two different types of TIG torch that you can use. These are our welding process settings. Gas Cutting Accessories. Water Pumps - Honda. Keep a fire extinguisher beside the exit door from your workshop.
T ig welding can produce beautiful looking welds, and more importantly, x-ray quality deposits on some of the most critical welding applications.
You can activate remote mode on the High Frequency torch. Hold the torch in the hand that feels the most comfortable. Since TIG welding allows very low amperage output as low as 5A on some welders , the TIG welding helmet must be sensitive enough to auto-darken on such a low-powered arc. The filler rod will melt and flow into the weld pool. The gas post flow time should be significantly longer than slope down time. The Metal. Hold the torch as shown in the photograph below. Controlling the weld current is best done by using a remote foot pedal pictured on the left. If the tungsten turns blue on gets pitted after welding, turn the post flow up. Pure argon works for TIG welding all metals from steel to aluminum and copper. Some basic parameters are consistent to all TIG welding whereas many other functions may only be available on higher specification machines. This is great for when you need to weld in tight spaces. TIG welding requires patience and practice.
