Thunderbirds is a British electronic-marionette television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson , and production company AP Films. It follows the adventures and exploits of International Rescue , a secret organisation dedicated to saving the lives of people caught up in natural, technological and man-made disasters. The series spawned the " classic Thunderbirds " franchise which, together with a collection of comics, novels, and audio stories, still continues to this day. Filmed between - using a puppetry technique dubbed "Supermarionation" - Thunderbirds first aired on the 30th September and finished on Christmas Day , after thirty-two minute-long episodes. Despite the ongoing success of the program domestically, failure to sell the programme in the United States resulted in the show ending after just two seasons.
