This article lists the characters over the years that are not rail-based. Terence is an orange tractor fitted with caterpillar tracks. The Railway Series is a series of British books by the Rev. Unless otherwise stated on this page, the technical notes come from actual notes laid out by Wilbert Awdry when he was developing the characters and setting for his stories; these notes are cited in his publication The Island of Sodor: Its People, History, and Railways. From onwards, it is managed by three Fat Controllers. We shall be glad to welcome all who want to see and travel behind, real engines. Thomas arrived on Sodor soon after he was built in , for a nominal sum. He initially worked as the station pilot at Vicarstown, shunting coaches for the big engines to take out on long journeys, and he longed to see the world. After helping to rescue James from a nasty accident, Thomas was dubbed a "Really Useful Engine", and was permanently assigned to the Ffarquhar Branch Line , along with two faithful coaches, Annie and Clarabel. Edward is a blue ex- Furness Railway K2 class mixed-traffic engine , and is the railway's 2 engine. He was the first character created by the Rev. Sometimes, the big engines would tease Edward for being old-fashioned, slow, and unreliable. In the story Edward's Exploit , during one rainy evening, Edward was taking a passenger train full of enthusiasts home to Tidmouth, when his sanding gear failed. On a steep hill, his crack-pin snapped, damaging his wheel splashers and forcing his driver and fireman to remove his side rods. However, Edward was able to pull his heavy train back very late, but with triumph.
He first appeared in Duck and the Diesel Enginewhich he employs his devious scheming to frame Duck after being humiliated by him. She is the same type of plane as Emerson.
In Series 6 , a new set of characters was introduced called "The Pack". The characters were devised by then- producer Phil Fehrle with the intention of being turned into a spin-off series, possibly as a rival to HIT Entertainment 's other successful show and brand Bob the Builder. The current title character of the franchise is Thomas the Tank Engine , an anthropomorphised steam locomotive, who works with other engines, including Edward, Henry, Gordon, James , Percy, Toby and many others. The franchise began with stories told from Wilbert Awdry to his son.
