In April, the ad agency Leo Burnett Tailor Made, filled Wikipedia entries of Brazilian landmarks with professional shots featuring the brand, with the intention of causing Google to display the same images in the top few search results. The photos uploaded by the agency prominently featured models wearing North Face gear in the foreground of the shot. The substitution was only noticed when the agency proudly revealed what it had done in a lavishly produced video shared by industry publication AdAge. Adding content that is solely for commercial promotion goes directly against the policies, purpose and mission of Wikipedia to provide neutral, fact-based knowledge to the world. But some good has come of the campaign. In order to upload images to Wikipedia, users must allow their work to be edited and reused so that the free nature of the encyclopedia can be preserved. That means that savvy editors have been hard at work cropping The North Face logo out of otherwise perfectly usable landscape shots, leaving them available to use on the free encyclopaedia forever — without offering free advertising to a clothing company. Yesterday, we were disappointed to learn that The North Face, an outdoor recreation product company, and Leo Burnett Tailor Made, an ad agency retained by The North Face, unethically manipulated Wikipedia. They have risked your trust in our mission for a short-lived marketing stunt. Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation did not collaborate on this stunt, as The North Face falsely claims. In fact, what they did was akin to defacing public property, which is a surprising direction from The North Face. We also work for the preservation of a public good. For more than 18 years, Wikipedia volunteers have been writing, perfecting, sourcing, and referencing more than 50 million articles that anyone can access for free on the internet.
While the northern side of the mountain rises more than 3, m 10, ft above the two valleys of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, the southern side faces the large glaciers of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, the most glaciated region in the Alps. The most notable feature of the Eiger is its nearly 1,metre-high 5, ft north face of rock and ice, named Eiger-Nordwand , Eigerwand or just Nordwand , which is the biggest north face in the Alps. The north face, the "last problem" of the Alps, considered amongst the most challenging and dangerous ascents, was first climbed in by an Austrian-German expedition. Since , at least 64 climbers have died attempting the north face, earning it the German nickname Mordwand , literally "murder ous wall"—a pun on its correct title of Nordwand North Wall. Although the summit of the Eiger can be reached by experienced climbers only, a railway tunnel runs inside the mountain, and two internal stations provide easy access to viewing-windows carved into the rock face.

The North Face is a heterosexual romance novel by Mary Renault , who later became famous for historical novels set in ancient Greece and featuring homosexual love between male characters. The protagonists are Neil Langton and Ellen Shorland, both of whom have tragic pasts and both of whom are staying at a boarding house in Cornwall. They both have a passion for mountain climbing , which is what first brings them together. Neil is in the process of obtaining a divorce from an adulterous wife, whilst mourning the death of his young daughter, and Ellen is mourning the loss of her first love Jock, who died in World War II , believing herself incapable of loving again. The novel is set in the period immediately after the end of the war. In her fifth novel North Face nursing becomes character rather than plot. Inside a love story between two guests in a Yorkshire [ sic ] boarding house after the war, Renault uses two women in their thirties as a kind of sparring Greek chorus, ruminating on the morality or not of the affair. Already very much professional spinsters, one is a desiccated prissy academic, while the other is a blowzy, more down-to-earth professional nurse. Though the satire is at the expense of them both at times they are more entertaining than the rather laboured love story , the nurse at least feels in touch with life. If Mary Renault had ever considered academia, this is surely her verdict on the choice she made.
