The album's title is partly inspired by the character, Hawk , from the television series, Twin Peaks. I was sitting in the van and drew this pocket knife. I thought it was a badass nickname. As it was getting close to the time we needed to make a decision on the album name, I found the picture with the pocket knife that I had drawn in the van coming back from recording. I just said the name and everyone kind of just agreed, and that's how it came up. On February 22, , a 10 year celebratory special edition vinyl was announced alongside an album specific tour.

It was released on September 18, , on Fueled by Ramen , their first for the label. In an interview, frontman Brian Sella talked about the idea for the album title. He stated that "The inspiration for the name Back On Top sort of just came from… it was an idea that we had like, a while ago, when we all kind of got a kick out it. You can kind of grasp on different parts of it. He then went on to talk about the writing and recording process, stating "the writing and recording process sort of… we wrote the album, and then we went out to record it in California. We got to work with an awesome producer and we got to throw our ideas at him, and I think we got to kind of learn how to make an album professionally, you know? The band announced they were releasing their first album under Fueled By Ramen on July 30, They released the lead single, Help, off the album the same day. In an AllMusic review by James Christopher Monger, the Front Bottoms are recognized for "making the jump to a major label without losing any authenticity in process", with Monger calling the album a "spirited set of good time folk-punk that's as hook-filled and hilarious as it is filthy. The group formed in Soon after, Uychich's brother Brian Uychich keyboard, vocals began sitting in on their practices. Brian asked to join the band, playing an old keyboard he found in the Uychich family attic. This completed the original lineup, with which the first two albums and EP were recorded. They spent the next few years playing locally around New Jersey and eventually doing extensive tours around the country. In between tours, Sella worked at a grocery store and Uychich worked in landscaping. Additionally, a five-song cassette, Calm Down and Breathe , was handmade by the band in , and limited to 30 copies.

In the span of five albums, two EPs and a handful of scattered mixtapes and one-off drops, The Front Bottoms have donned many a cap. Most will agree on their folk-punk phase as their most defining: the go-to structure was a bed of raw, harshly strummed acoustics, playful horns and jangly keys over which frontman Brian Sella would wax lyrical — with clarity and polish defiantly optional — on frayed connections, anxiety and general early-adulthood turbulence. But if anything, it seemed The Front Bottoms had found a comfortable medium to exist within; a formula to which future instalments could adapt. It makes Back On Top feel milquetoast in comparison. The Front Bottoms have officially entered chaos mode, and we needed to know everything about it. Thankfully, we got a ring…. In a way, this record feels like a response to Going Grey : that LP was very tight, focussed and pop-centric, whereas Sickness is very loose, jammy and experimental.
