Gumball enlists Carrie to help bring Darwin and Teri together, but when they can't make Darwin and Teri's love blossom naturally, they decide to make it happen supernaturally. At school , Darwin is writing a poem as Gumball and Carrie look on. Seeing how desperate he is, Gumball suggests going into more extreme methods to set him up, such as making a love potion, which Carrie quickly declines to. Unbeknownst to Gumball, Carrie is still somewhat jealous and secretly plots to sabotage his plans. Their first plan involves trying to trick Teri into entering a quarantine, but Carrie sabotages this plan by throwing out the soda bottle meant to be a "deadly chemical. Later at the library , Gumball tells Carrie his next plan: marry Darwin and Teri online. Finally, the guilt-ridden Carrie admits she was trying to ruin Darwin's chances with Teri because of her feelings for him. Gumball gives her his sympathies but tells her that Darwin no longer has romantic feelings for her and there is nothing they can do about it but help him find his love. Carrie sadly agrees and decides to make the love potion that will bring Teri and Darwin together, using Darwin's shoe, a piece of Teri, and her own tear as ingredients. Once the potion is ready, Gumball dips arrows into it and shoots both Darwin and Teri, making them instantly fall in love. Back home, Darwin is getting ready for his date. Gumball is expecting him to show his gratitude after setting him up, which only confuses the latter.

Thinking Teri is Darwin's new crush, Gumball decides to play matchmaker , with Carrie tagging along to play saboteur. Tropes: All Love Is Unrequited : Carrie thought this was the case with Darwin, hence she used her tears as the ingredient for the love potion. Thankfully for her, it wasn't, as Darwin seeing her cry caused him to break out of the love potion's effects and get together with her. Atmosphere Abuse : Exaggerated when Darwin overdoes it with spraying himself with deodorant for his date with Teri, which ends up "punching a hole in the ozone layer" just above the Watterson house, resulting in a beam of light causing the house to lightly burn. Cargo Ship : Teri is still affected by the spell after Darwin breaks out, so Gumball uses the love potion to make her fall in love with her own disinfecting spray bottle so she won't intervene with Darwin and Carrie finally asking each other out. Chekhov's Gun : Carrie uses her tears to make the love potion.

What I like the most about The Matchmaker is that it starts off with a whole minute of taking Darwin seriously. The starting song is anguished and emotional, the speakers are crying, and everything plays off like a music video. I think it would have been very easy for the writers to insert jokes, to make the lyrics sound weird, or to exaggerate the situation into ridiculousness. But instead, for almost a whole minute, the show lets Darwin just be sad. It remains one of the most powerful scenes in the franchise because everything is played straight, and it just fits so well - Darwin is allowed to be an angsty teenager, without having any laughing fingers pointed at him.
