Tango Caravans is a boutique company operating out of Somerton, the caravan manufacturing capital of Australia. Tango has a wide range of caravans available. In fact, it seems this company is always adding something new to the line-up. The latest is the Stevie Series, a van built with a meranti timber frame, clad with composite aluminium, and a whole lot of creature comforts. We had the opportunity to spend some time with the 18ft 6in Stevie Series. One thing that Tango has always done well: interior design. When the company launched about five years ago, I was impressed by the breezy interior of the first Tango I checked out.

Tango Caravans recently launched The Clan, a series of caravans with a focus on the family. It is available in a range of different sizes and, yes, you could have it built as an offroader if you wanted to. However, the van we hitched up was a blacktop tourer with a very attractive, practical layout for families. Tango Caravans is owned and operated by Sarah Horter, who has grown up in the caravan manufacturing industry. This van is intended as a kind of tribute to her family and Scottish heritage. Sarah said it took a few builds to get the layout right, but the effort appears to have been worth it. There are three bunks stretched across the rear wall of the van, each with a reading light with an integrated USB point for charging devices. Often, when a van is fitted with three bunks, head room feels a bit limited; however, in this van, there is loads of space for each kid to be comfortable. A large club lounge sits along the offside wall, facing the kitchen. The table is mounted to a telescopic leg — just push a button with your foot and push the table down to create the base for yet another bed. A hinged section above provides yet more bench space. Tango Caravans has neatly built a microwave into the overhead cabinetry, while a large fridge-freezer sits between the dinette and bunks. A fully-moulded fibreglass shower is built nicely into the nearside, while the toilet and vanity is on the offside. Aesthetically, it is great.

From the outside this van is built well and looks pretty cool.

Astrid was carefully taken care of, frequently cleaned and maintained and has had the 1k and 10k km services with receipts included. Contrasting Luuk oak bench tops throughout, Hatari hard wearing vinyl flooring and the bedhead and L shaped lounge has been finished in Vivia blue steel trim. The Australian RV market is overflowing with new caravans. I arrived at the Campbellfield, Vic, headquarters of Tango Caravans to find a van that appears to outstrip many of its competitors in the value-for-money stakes. The Escape, you see, might resemble other vans in its class — white aluminium cladding and slightly raked front profile — but, features-wise, it packs a pretty hard wallop. Tango Caravans was established about a year and a half ago by Sarah Horter. To say caravans are in her DNA would be an understatement.

As got underway, it was time to find a van to feature within these pages. As it happened, a van found me. Now, Tango Caravans sells vans from numerous manufacturers; however, Tango also has its own range built to sell under the Tango banner. Our Tango Escape Series was a 21ft 6in tandem-axle van with a meranti timber frame, composite aluminium cladding combined with black checkerplate protection, and a long list of equipment. An hour later, I was setup next to a beautiful lake…. Our 21ft 6in external body length Tango Escape Series was a family van, with two bunks in the rear-offside corner and a bathroom to the nearside. A cupboard incorporating a front-loader washing machine fills the rear wall space between. The nearside kitchen features a four-burner cooktop, griller and oven beneath a hinged section of Laminex-finished benchtop which, when closed, provides additional work space.

In fact, it seems this company is always adding something new to the line-up. Storage space throughout the van is another highpoint. Sarah, Taylor and team at Tango have been amazing to deal with. RV Daily March 6, September 14, Remember Me. I was, however, surprised by the size of the bathroom. So far these guys are legendary. A small point, however. We are very happy with our van and the help we received. Repeat buyers says it all. There are two litre water tanks mounted underneath as well as two Ah batteries fitted to the chassis that can take charge from the twin amp solar panels mounted on the roof.
