Swallows and Amazons is a British family adventure film directed by Philippa Lowthorpe and written by Andrea Gibb , based on Arthur Ransome 's children's novel of the same name. Principal photography began on 21 June in the Lake District. The film, which was released on 19 August , is the third audiovisual adaption of the novel; the first being a 6-part BBC TV series in and the second a film version. The film is based on Ransome's book, but the script incorporates many changes to the plot. It chronicles the story of the Walker children on their holiday in the Lake District in the summer of They want to camp on an island in the lake.

Swallows and Amazons is a children's adventure novel by English author Arthur Ransome first published on 21 July by Jonathan Cape. It is the first book in the Swallows and Amazons series , followed by Swallowdale. At the time, Ransome had been working as a journalist with the Manchester Guardian , but decided to become a full-time author rather than go abroad as a foreign correspondent. He did continue to write part-time for the press, however. The book was inspired by a summer spent by Ransome teaching the children of his friends, the Altounyans, to sail. Three of the Altounyan children's names are adopted directly for the Walker family. Ransome and Ernest Altounyan bought two small dinghies called Swallow and Mavis. Ransome kept Swallow until he sold it a number of years later, while Mavis remained in the Altounyan family and is now on permanent display in the Ruskin Museum. However, later in life Ransome tried to downplay the Altounyan connections, changing the initial dedication of Swallows and Amazons and writing a new foreword which gave other sources. The book relates the outdoor adventures and play of two families of children. These involve sailing, camping, fishing, exploration and piracy.

They had originally been training boats used by the Royal Naval Sailing Association. But the book and, I imagine, its sequels are also immensely practical, filled with cleverly inserted information about sailing technique, how to camp out, and how to be resourceful. It's well filmed, with only minor plot adaptations although large chunks are missed out , and the scenery and period details are especially well done. Once they reach the island, they set up a proper camp, cook their own meals and sail around the lake. We believe children should have fun. A small note on why it was not five stars because I know how precious we find them and seriously we take ratings and that's because it simply did not give me the five star feeling.

Children messing about in boats is not enough for this adaptation, which injects an adult espionage twist more Famous Five than Arthur Ransome. The action must be ramped up.
