Selecting colours for an exterior scheme can be tricky, mainly due to people not getting the tone quite right. Colours perform so differently outside to inside and we often don't take into account quite how much impact the sun has on an exterior colour palette. Colorbond Surfmist sometimes gets a bad rap however, let me show you why using Surfmist as a trim colour can be a good idea. I wrote this article in April and it is all still relevant today. However, Colorbond has announced in late August that they have a new white — Dover White.

I think your concerns can easily be rectified with good landscaping. We've got a shale grey roof. Love it. We also have a light tone on weatherboards angora blue- half. The overall effect is very light and cool. Which let me say, after the hot spell we've had in Sydney over Christmas, has been fabulous. I will never go back to dark roof. Gal is banned in our council area. Not a fan of 'white' roofs at all despite the environmental benefits. Windspray is dark enough to provide grounding to the build but light enough to be environmentally friendly. Alternatively, consider good old fashioned galvanised iron in lieu of colorbond. Surfmist House Sandy Anghie Architect.
Situated in the busy residential spot in a beachside suburb of Perth, Western Australia, the Surfmist House designed by Sandy Anghie Architect is a fresh addition and renovation to a s house which has undergone a series of renovations over the past decades. The first concern was the street appeal of the house. The existing home exhibited a dated facade with dull and dark shades of brown paint. Not to mention the new colour matched the energy and spirit of the whole beachside suburb! Some people prefer beachside houses to enjoy the breathtaking views surrounding the area. Ironically, the next problem stems from the fact that despite being located only a few houses from the beach, the original house did not take advantage of its location and lacked scenic views.
About 15 years ago a local builder asked me to design an exterior colour scheme for his new display home. We wanted to achieve a classic timeless appeal for the property as it was important that the house remained contemporary and relevant for as long as possible and so I opted for some warm neutral brown grey tones — the quintessential neutral exterior palette. This really is a great lesson and one that I often relate to clients as re-painting the exterior of a house can be very costly and this is really only something you want to undertake every 15 years or so. Of course, a colour scheme on one house cannot always be translated successfully to another. Quite often the appeal of a wall colour is enhanced by a contrasting trim for the fascia board or window corbelling.

So, ideally, you want to get it right the first time you do it. This is a fancy way of saying that the house itself will tell you what type of colours to choose, and where they need to go. It may be that you want the home to have a Hamptons feel. Or a coastal style. Or to seem edgy and contemporary. Each of these styles will have a particular colour association.

Vicky Missiakos says: oh and the trimmings will also be surfmist. I love how your house looks!! Good luck Samantha. My only reservation is where the render modern contemporary single storey house in southern NSW still looks like unpainted concrete eg Dulux White Duck with its grey undertones. The characteristics of these colours are they are not uniform in nature, will lighten over time and can be customised in colour on site before your project begins. We are considering Surfmist for the gables, gutters and fascia but are unsure if it will be to much as the Wallaby is quite dark. You can certainly use Surfmist roof and trim with either Shale Grey for a cooler look or Dune for a warmer tone. Houzz Discussions. Thank you for your advice x.
