Sukkot 2024 Today. The Jewish holiday of Sukkot, also known as the Feast of Booths, begins on the 15th day of the seventh month in the biblical calendar—or October 16 this year.
Sukkot takes place from the 15th through the 21st day of Tishrei, which generally corresponds to mid-October. The eighth day, the day after Sukkot, is also a holiday but is considered separately. Businesses will close and work will be avoided by observant Jews on the first and last days of Sukkot, but they will often vacation and engage in a flurry of activity in the intermediate six days of Sukkot. The Torah, or Old Testament, commanded Israel to keep the Feast of Sukkot by building small tabernacles to live in for a week. This was to remind them of their time spent living in tents for 40 years in the wilderness, after the Exodus from Egypt but before entering the Promised Land.
