Strava flyby

Nothing loads when I click on Flybys on my activity.

Strava has somewhat quietly turned off, for all users, the Flyby feature, after a tweet went viral during the last few days, based on privacy concerns. Users can re-enable it, but only if they knew it was disabled in the first place. With some 70 million users being disabled with the flick of a switch, the feature essentially becomes useless overnight. First though, a quick explainer on what Strava Flyby is. There were many cool uses for it, such as seeing how a race was won as the little icons moved about, or see if that pro that blew past you on your training ride was really a pro. I wrote a little bit about it five years ago, showing how it worked on a random Sunday morning ride.

The new compare tool displays distance and elevation along your activity. Selected activities are projected onto your activity path along all sections where you traveled the same path. The colored circles show the projected positions of selected activities. Each colored line plots the time gaps between a selected activity and the main activity. The main activity appears as a flat black line. In the example above, near mile 10 red was 3 minutes ahead of black. Had red stopped at mile 10, black would have caught up in 3 minutes.

Strava has made changes to its flyby feature, with users now having to opt-in for the comparisons and overview function. Flybys are a tool that allows you to see the profiles of people you passed while cycling or running, also letting you view their full route. But the function has raised some safety concerns, as Strava users pointed out it would be easy to use flybys to track athletes, figure out their routine, and even see dark or secluded areas of their route. While it has always been possible to make your flybys private, many users may not have known the feature existed, or been aware of the ways you can make your account private and secure. In response to the safety concerns, Strava has now made flybys a private feature by default, with users having to switch the function on to get the overview of their activities. The Flybys tool is a Strava Labs function that allows cyclists and runners to play back their activities, as well as those users who were around you at the time, on a map and timeline. Previously athletes were able to opt out of the feature manually by heading to their privacy settings and choose whether everyone or no-one could access them. Strava recently released another new function - goal graphs.

Also, users need to opt into showing up on FlyBys, so I've found it's not nearly as useful as it once was. I knew about the price increase already, so it was obvious to me that this was an error in their email. Could you have done something more to conserve energy on the climbs in order to have more matches to burn to chase back? To get full segment functionality you have to be a paid subscriber. I read it over a morning cuppa just after 6am and it spurred me on to have another look at my privacy settings. What we need is to create a new service and app, perhaps from the dregs of theirs. They should obviously know how many of their users click through the FlyBys — I know I look at it for every activity I post. In the mean time I could see their track on the fly-by page without any problem. You were able to chase back when the road flattened, but you had to burn several matches to do so.
